STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Board of Control approved four sport coaches’ recommendations for the spring sports’ season regulations and passed the 2019-20 operational budget at its October meeting today.
Two coaches’ recommendations were passed in track and field. The Board gave final authority to the executive staff to determine the location, date and time for all regional and sectional meets when no host can be found or when multiple schools have expressed an interest in hosting the meets. The second approved action in track and field was an amended coaches’ recommendation to open the stadium for only wheelchair student-athletes at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
In softball, the Board passed a coaches’ recommendation to designate the higher seed as the home team at the State Tournament with the choice of dugouts to be determined at the State Tournament seed meeting beginning in 2020.
The Board supported the one recommendation of the baseball coaches to designate the higher seed as the home team at the State Tournament and prescribe the order of games for each division beginning in 2020.
The Board also ratified the $9.3 million operational budget for 2019-20 and approved appointments to the Conference Realignment Task Force and to the Sportsmanship Committee.
Other topics shared in the executive staff reports to the Board were reviews of the fall Area Meeting discussions, as well as the potential constitutional amendments, including creating a definition for boarding schools; determining policies for member schools transitioning from single-gender to co-ed enrollment pertaining to divisional placement regulations; and determining a uniform coaching contact date for the summertime.
The Board also received a liaison reports from Mike Thompson of the Department of Public Instruction, John Ashley of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, Todd Sobrilsky of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association, and Pam Foegen of the National Federation of State High School Associations Board of Directors.
The membership of the WIAA oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 511 senior high schools and 50 junior high/middle level schools in its membership.
