MADISON, Wis. – Champions in two divisions were crowned at the 2024 State Girls Team Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Center Saturday.
Second-seeded Brookfield East (27-1) edged former two-time defending championship Arrowhead (27-2) 4-3 in the championship match.
Caroline Raster won her #1 singles flight for the Spartans after placing fifth at the State Individual Tennis Championships last week. Lily Sun and Yukiko Mitchell also won their singles matches at the #2 and #3 flights, respectively. Shriya Pusunuru and Cece Bonfilio contributed to the victory by winning their match at #3 doubles.
Brookfield East wins its first State team championship in their ninth State Tournament appearance. The Spartans defeated Westosha Central 6-1 in the quarterfinals Friday and Middleton 5-2 in the semifinals earlier Saturday to advance to the final.
The Warhawks placed runner-up in their fifth tourney appearance. They defeated Monona Grove 7-0 in the quarterfinals and Neenah 5-2 in the semifinals to advance to the championship match.
In Division 2, top-seeded Brookfield Academy (19-5) claimed a 4-3 win over second-seeded Aquinas (25-4) in the title match. The Blue Knights won their first title in their first-ever State Tournament appearance.
Kylie Matz won the Blue Knights’ only singles flight in the match at #1 after she won the Division 2 individual title a week ago. The turning point of the match were the wins at all three doubles flights. Audrey Quernemoen and Marina Matson won their #1 doubles flight match after placing fifth last week in the individual tournament. In addition, Marilee Nygro and Claire Tian were victors at the #2 position, and Faith Landowski and Ritisha Mathur contributed with a win at the #3 flight.
Brookfield Academy defeated Newman Catholic 7-0 to advance to the final. The Blugolds are runners-up in their sixth trip to the State Team Tournament. They defeated Kohler 5-2 in the semifinals to earn their berth in the championship match.
