Forty-Two Individual Wrestling Champions Crowned

The 75th Annual State Individual Wrestling produced a pair of four-time champions and 40 other gold medalists at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. Saturday.

Jeremy Schoenherr of Stratford and Sam Stuhl of Ellsworth each became members of a select group of 16 State four-time champions.

Schoenherr remained undefeated at 36-0 with a 13-5 major decision in the 138-pound title bout in Division 3. He won the 113 championship in 2015, the 126 title in 2016 and the 138 crown last year. Stuhl improved his season record to 41-1 with a pin at 5:50 mark of the 138-pound match in Division 2. His three previous titles came at 120 in 2015 while wrestling at Prescott, and at 126 and 132 in 2016 and 2107, respectively.

A.J. Schoenfuss of Stratford came up short of his bid to become a four-time champion. Jordan Boldt of Bonduel outlasted Schoenfuss in the title match in Division 3 with a 4-3 decision in the ultimate tie-breaker.

Two wresters won championships for the third time. Bryce Bosman of Luxemburg-Casco won his bout by a 1-0 decision at 126 in Division 2 to improve his record to 48-2. He earned titles at 106 in 2016 and at 113 in 2017. Brock Schlough of Boyceville added a third title by notching a pin at 3:02 in the final in Division 3 to improve his record this season to 47-0. 

Twelve wrestlers won their second individual championship. In Division 1, Eric Barnett of Hortonville remained undefeated at 46-0 to win the 113-pound title after winning at 106 last season. Keegan O’Toole of Arrowhead upped his record to 43-1 and added the crown at 126 following the title he won at 120 a year ago. Drew Scharenbrock of Sun Prairie remained undefeated with a 51-0 this season in winning the championship at 145 pounds after his State title at 120 last year. Peyton Mocco of West Allis Hale moved up to 160 to defeat the defending champion in the weight class and improve his record to 54-1. Aric Bohn of Mukwonago successfully defended the championship he won at 220 last year to improve to 43-5, as did Keaton Kluever of Kaukauna at 285 to improve his record this season to 48-2.

In Division 2, Shane Liegel of River Valley earned his second title by winning the gold medal at 170 and improving his record to 48-0 following a championship at 152 in 2017. Hunter Luepke of Spencer/Columbus Catholic added to the 195-pound title he won last year by winning at 220 this year with a record of 49-0.

Division 3 produced four two-time champions. Ryan Anderson of Clear Lake returned to championship form to win at 113 with a 46-0 record. He won the 106 championship in 2016. Koltin Grzybowski of Coleman won a championship for the second straight season. He added a gold medal at 113 with a 44-2 record after winning at 106 last year. Grzybowski’s teammate, Caleb Gross, was not to be outdone. He won the 120-pound title with a 47-1 mark after winning at 113 a year ago. Garrett Joles of Boyceville retained the title at 195 with an undefeated 42-0 season. 

In addition to the eight undefeated multiple-time champions, five other champions can claim an undefeated season. Parker Keckeisen of Nicolet won the 170 championship in Division 1 with a 31-0 record, and Beau Yineman of Neenah was crowned champion at 195 in Division 1 with a 45-0 mark. Aidan Medora of St. John’s NW Military Academy/Brookfield Academy improved to 34-0 to win the Division 2 championship at 132. Ryan Neu of Dodgeland won at 170 in Division 3 with a 44-0 mark, and Tanner Weber completed his season with a 44-0 in winning the Division 3 285-pound crown.

There were 38 different wrestling programs to win State titles, with Coleman, Boyceville, Iowa-Grant and Spencer/Columbus Catholic winning two individual championships.

The State Team Wrestling Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday, March 2-3 at the UW Field House in Madison, Wis.
