Girls Soccer Completes Spring Tournaments with Four Champions

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The 2022 Girls State Soccer Tournament determined champions in four divisions at KOHLER Engines Field at Uihlein Soccer Park Saturday.

Top-seeded Muskego (18-1-3) broke a tie with a goal late in the second half to edge last year’s champion Divine Savior Holy Angels (20-3-2) 2-1 in the Division 1 championship game. It was a rematch of the 2019 championship game also won by the Warriors.

Mady Wojcik netted a free kick from outside the box that sailed over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead at the 71:12 point of the second half, which proved to be the game winner.

Muskego scored first with a free kick at 35:12 in the first half. Anna Sikorski drove in a shot from outside the box to the upper right corner of the goal. The Dashers scored the equalizer at the 48:45 mark of the second half off a corner kick. Bridget Parks headed the kick from Piper Dupies over the goalkeeper into the middle of the goal.

The Warriors outshot the Dashers 14-9 in the game, and the two teams each had three corner kicks. Sikorski led Muskego in shot attempts with four, and Klara Muench contributed with three shots. Ella Kratochvil faced only two shots on goal in the game, making one save. Sophia Miranda attempted four shots for the Dashers to lead the team. Kate Nonn allowed two scores in goal and made four stops.

Muskego won its second State championship in its seventh appearance in the tourney. Divine Savior Holy Angels finished runner-up in its 11th State appearance.

In Division 2, second-seeded Oregon (23-0-1) edged top-seeded and 2021 champion Whitefish Bay (21-5-1) 1-0 in the title game.

The only goal of the game came in the second half at the 62:44 mark. Katelyn Studebaker directed a rebound of a Lily Eisele shot past the goalkeeper into the net. The Panthers outshot the Blue Dukes 15-12 in the game with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Studebaker and Zoey Pagels led the Panthers with three and four shots, respectively. Payton Lang was credited with the win in goal, making four saves.

Ella Luna had four shots and Sofia Englund had two shots on goal to lead the Blue Dukes. Riley Franklin allowed the one goal and made five saves.

Oregon won the program’s third State championship in its seventh State Tournament appearance, and Whitefish Bay finished runner-up in its membership-leading 22nd State experience.

In Division 3, top-seeded New Berlin Eisenhower (22-2-1) cruised to a 6-1 victory over third-seeded Notre Dame in the championship game to win the State title.

The Lions took command of the game early in the game on a goal by Mary Kowitz with an assist from Sarah Stadler at 7:35 of the first half. Lauren Hernandez scored the next two goals for the Lions. The first was a kick from 10 yards out off a cross from Stadler at 16:40. Hernandez’s second goal was a tap into the right side of the goal off an assist from Suza Micanovic at 34:41.

Eisenhower picked up where it left off in the first half with a goal 54 seconds into the second half. Taylor Rinzel scored an unassisted goal off a free ball knocked into the left side of the net.

The Tritons scored their lone goal at 51:03 on a shot to the upper left corner of the goal by Stella Cuena assisted by Anna Clancy.

The Lions responded with a goal less than a minute later when Lauren Hernandez achieved a hat trick with her third goal of the game. She received a pass from Rinzel and scored from 10 yards away at 51:51. Alex Nunag capped the scoring at 72:01 with a shot inside the left post off a rebound of a Rinzel shot.

The Lions had a significant advantage in shots in the game at 21-4 and in corner kicks at 7-1. Rinzel compiled a game-high nine shots, and Hernandez netted her three goals on four shot attempts. Lily Moore was credited with the win in goal for the Lions, stopping three of the four shots on goal she faced. She was relieved at the 77:15 point of the second half by Aislinn Fitzpatrick, who didn’t have to contend with any shots on goal.

Cuene, Maggie Thillman, Audrey Burnell and Anna Clancy each attempted a shot to account for the Tritons’ four shots. Carlen Goral started in goal for Notre Dame. She made seven saves and surrendered six goals before Emma Skaletski came in for the final 6:09 of the game, making one save.

New Berlin Eisenhower won the program’s first State championship in its seventh experience in the State Tournament. Notre Dame finished runner-up for the second straight season. It was the 14th time the Tritons participated in the State Tournament.

Second-seeded Lake Country Lutheran (15-5-2) downed fourth-seeded The Prairie School (12-6-4) 3-1 in the Division 4 championship final to capture the crown.

The Hawks were the first to score in the game. Sarah Koker sent a corner kick that bent toward the goal and deflected through the goalkeeper’s hands for the unassisted goal at 13:37 into the game. The Prairie School controlled play in the first half with a 15-5 advantage in shots attempted.

The Lightning offense came to life in the second half with three goals. Leyla Kelbel tied the game at 1-1 when she bent a shot from the left side of the penalty box to the upper right corner of the goal at 48:54.

They added what proved to be the game-winning goal at 67:15 when Brooke Kerwin received an assist from Kelbel and converted a kick to the upper right corner of the net. Grace Daniels added an insurance score for the Lightning on a shot over the goalkeeper’s reach with 4:07 remaining in the game.

Olivia Blair led the Lightning in shots attempted with five, and Kelbel contributed with four shots. Lauren Krempelbein started in goal for the Lightning and yielded a goal and made three saves before she left the game because of injury at the 28:27 mark of the first half. Emily Johnson served the final 51:33 in goal and made four saves to be credited with the win.

The Prairie School finished the game with a 23-15 advantage in shots adn a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Rihanna Kern recorded a game-high eight shots. Norah Boerner and Meg Decker chipped in with six and five shots, respectively.

Lake Country Lutheran won its first State championship in its first State appearance as a stand-alone program. The Lightning won a Division 3 title in a co-op arrangement in 2012. The Prairie School finished runner-up in its eighth State experience.
