Marquette & Brookfield Academy Capture Boys Team Tennis Titles

MADISON, Wis. – Marquette and Brookfield Academy captured State Team Boys Tennis Championships Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of UW-Madison.

The second-seeded Hilltoppers (19-4) won their 13th championship in the last 16 seasons a 4-3 win over previously undefeated and top-seeded Middleton (21-1) in the championship match. Bodi Russo won his match at the #4 singles position and Marquette swept the three doubles positions to win the match. Last week’s doubles champions Daniel Egelhoff and Lincoln Marshall won their #1 doubles match vs. the Middleton duo that placed fourth.

The Hilltoppers defeated Westosha Central 6-1 in the quarterfinals and edged Brookfield Central 4-3 in the semifinals to advance to the final. The Cardinals rolled over Badger 7-0 in the quarterfinals and advanced to the championship match after cruising past Middleton 7-0 in the semifinals.

Marquette won its 15th State Team Tennis championship in its 19th State appearance, and Middleton finished runner-up in its 15th State appearance.

Brookfield Academy (24-4), the #1 seed in Division 2, won its second straight title with a 7-0 victory over second-seeded University School of Milwaukee (14-6) in the championship match.

The Blue Knights won swept the singles match, which included a win by Adrian Yin at the #1 position over State singles champion Max Watchmaker. Yin finished runner-up to Watchmaker at the individual tournament last week.

Brookfield Academy won all three doubles matches. The duo or Peyton Zeiler and Garv Bhasin won their match at the #2 position after earning the State doubles title last week, and Vibhu Guda and Sanjit Madireddi won at the #1 position after a runner-up finish last week.

The Blue Knights advanced to the championship with a 7-0 win over East Troy in the semifinals. The Wildcat beat Aquinas 6-1 in their semifinal to gain a berth in the title match.

The Blue Knights won their second championship in four State Team Tournament appearances. The Wildcats finish runner-up in their 15th State experience.
