STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Middleton captured the championship of the alternate season State Girls Team Tournament Saturday at the Menard Tennis Center in Eau Claire.
The second-seeded Cardinals edged top-seeded Neenah 4-3 in the championship match to win the program’s second State team tennis title. They also won gold in Division 1 in 2013.
Middleton won singles flights at the #1, #2 and #4 positions. Among those singles wins, Netra Sumasundaram, who finished fifth last week in the individual tournament, defeated Ava Dunsirn, who placed third last week, in the #1 singles match by set scores of 6-2, 6-2.
The tandem of Charlotte and Caroline Sax won the #3 doubles flight to provide the margin of victory for the Cardinals. The Rockets’ Sophia Paape and Shelby Roth, who placed runner-up in doubles play at the individual championships last week, defeated the Middleton duo of Karsen Dettman and Noor Rajpal 5-7, 6-0 (9) at the #1 flight.
The Cardinals advanced to the title match with a 6-1 win over Ashwaubenon in the semifinals, and Neenah earned its berth in the final with a 7-0 win over Verona in its semifinal match-up.
