Middleton Wins Second Straight Div. 1 Boys Swimming & Diving Title

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Middleton won the Division 1 team championship, and one event record was set at the 100th State Boys Swimming & Diving Championships at the Waukesha South High School Natatorium Saturday.

The Cardinals won their second consecutive State team title and their third overall by compiling 273 points. Madison Memorial was second for the with 178 points, and Arrowhead was third with 177 points.

Sam Wolf of Middleton earned titles in three events. He swam to the crown in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:47.97 following a third-place finish a year ago. His pace ranks sixth-best in the history of the event. In addition, Wolf helped the Cardinals set the State Meet record in retaining the title in the 200 medley relay. He and teammates Max Carter, Caden Van Buren and Cowan Vitense enter the record book with a time of 1:30.61. Wolf also contributed to the Cardinals’ third straight championship in the 400 freestyle, joining Carter, Jackson Esteves and Ben Cutler Heiderscheit to post a winning time of 3:04.50.

David Mayer of D.C. Everest raced to glory in both the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 20.34 and 44.29, respectively. His time in 100 freestyle is the fifth-fastest time ever recorded in the event at the State Meet, and his 50 freestyle time ranks seventh.

Abram Mueller of Madison West also won two gold medals. He won the 100 breaststroke for the second straight season after setting the Division 1 record in 2023. His victory this season came in a time of 53.77, which is second on the all-time list behind the 53.20 he swam last year. He also finished runner-up in the event in 2022. Mueller also won the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.59 after finishing runner-up last year.

Andrew Hanson of Hudson won the 200 freestyle to return to the award stand for the fourth straight season after placing third last season and fourth in both 2022 and 2021. He posted a time of 1:36.93, which is the second-fastest time in the history of the State Championships. In the 500 freestyle, Carter Jewell of Muskego outlasted Hanson, who was the reigning champion and record-holder in the event, to earn the gold medal. Jewell’s time of 4:25.75 ranks second in the history of the meet.

Mason Bruhn of Franklin surged to victory in the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.08 following a third-place finish in 2023, and Brady Huettl of Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial, a three-time qualifier, won the diving competition with final score of  481.35 after finishing third last season and 11th in 2022.

The Brookfield Central/East quartet of Tom Bergin, Caleb Smith, Luke Thomas and Logan Loppnow claimed victory in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:25.32, edging former two-time defending champion Middleton.
