STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The 97th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys State Individual Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday, May 30-June 1 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and resume at 9 a.m. Friday. Competition on Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m. Ticket prices are $6 per session.

LAST YEAR: Second-seeded Colt Tegtmeier of Madison Memorial won the Division 1 singles title by defeating fifth-seeded Neel Raut of Oshkosh West 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in the championship match. In Division 1 doubles play, the third-seeded tandem of Noah Guillermo and Rob May of Marquette defeated the fourth-seeded duo of Ridley Aranda and Eli Winter of Nicolet in the championship match 6-3, 6-2. Second-seeded Pablo Dale of Brookfield Academy downed former two-time defending champion and top-seeded Casey Johnson of Kohler to win the Division 2 singles title by scores of 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. In Division 2 doubles play, third-seeded Liam and Tayte Matthews of Brookfield Academy captured the title with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over the top-seeded team of David Horak and Konnor Barth of Xavier in the final.
DIVISION 1 SINGLES OUTLOOK: Senior Will Tennison of Verona was granted the #1 seed for the second year in a row. He is undefeated this season with a 23-0 record. Tennison advanced to the quarterfinals last season after placing fourth in 2017 and qualifying as a freshman in 2016. Senior Nathan Balthazor of De Pere is the second seed after placing third last season and compiling a 23-2 record during the 2019 season. He qualified as a freshman in 2016 and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling out of title contention. Senior Ryan Gold of Middleton is seeded third for the second straight season entering play this week with a 21-6 record. He is a four-time qualifier, having advanced to the quarterfinals last year after winning his first-round matches before being ousted from title contention in 2016 and 2017. Johnny Zakowski, a senior from Green Bay Southwest, has compiled a 24-1 record this season, which earned him the fourth seed for the second consecutive season. The four-year qualifier finished fifth last season, won his first two matches before losing in 2017 and qualified his freshman season. Senior Mason Sniatynski of Badger has qualified for the fourth time as well. He has compiled a 21-1 record this season after reaching the third round of play last year, which represents his furthest advance in the tournament. Senior Aidan Schutter of Sun Prairie also qualifies for the fourth time. He has advanced to the third round the last two seasons after advancing to the second round in 2016. He comes into play this season with a 26-7 record. Sophomore Noah Viste of Wauwatosa East made his State debut last season, advancing to the second round. He qualifies this season with a 22-1 mark. Senior Alex Budde of Menomonee Falls has compiled a 24-4 record this spring and has received the eighth seed. He has qualified for the fourth time and is looking to advance past the second round for the first time.
DIVISION 1 DOUBLES OUTLOOK: The Arandas from Nicolet are the top seed in the bracket. The tandem has posted a 16-3 record this season, and both have tournament experience. Jaden, a senior, finished fourth in singles play last season and sixth in 2017 after qualifying and advancing to the second round as a freshman in 2016. Ridley, a junior, finished runner-up in doubles with a different partner last season and sixth in 2017. Seniors Jake Stockhausen and Teddy Brodzinski of Marquette qualify as a pair for the second straight season and are the #2 seed. The tandem enter play with a 27-3 record this year after finishing fifth a year ago. Brodzinski also qualified with a different partner in 2017 and fell in his first-round match, and Stockhauser teamed with another in 2016 to advance to the second round. The third seed was handed out to senior Danylo Ripeckyj and junior Max Loen of Eau Claire Memorial with a 26-5 record this year. Loen qualified with a different partner last year and advanced to the third round before being eliminated from title contention. The duo of senior Michael Vivian and junior Ben Fredeen of Green Bay Southwest comprise the fourth-seeded team. They are 17-2 this season after Fredeen qualified with a different partner last season and advanced to the third round. He also qualified with another partner in 2017. Vivian qualified in singles play last season and fell in his opening-round match. Junior Colin Knutson and sophomore Nick Fisher of Brookfield East are undefeated this season in limited action at 10-0. Fisher gained first-round State Tournament experience last season with a different partner. Senior Sam Dettman teams with senior Brandon Bodak of Middleton to form the #6 seed with a 24-4 record. Dettman has qualified the past two seasons with a different partner. He advanced to the quarterfinals last season and to the third round in 2017. Seniors Michael Morway and Joey Slicker of Homestead are seeded seventh. Morway has qualified as a singles player the past two seasons. He advanced to the third round last season and to the second round in 2017. Slicker advanced to the second round of doubles play with a different partner in 2017. The duo begins tourney play this week with a 23-4 mark this spring. Seniors Jordan Oaks and Cole Roecker of Kettle Moraine are the eighth seed with their 21-2 record this season. The tandem advanced to the third round a season ago. Roecker advanced to the second round with a different partner in 2017 and 2016.
DIVISION 2 SINGLES OUTLOOK: The top seed is junior Pablo Dale of Brookfield Academy, who is the defending champion. He enters the tournament undefeated this season at 17-0. Dale placed third in 2017. Sophomore Alex Sviatoslavsky of Edgewood is the second seed with a 19-4 mark. He advanced to the quarterfinals before being ousted from title contention last season as the eighth seed. Junior Daniel Taleghani of University School is 13-6 this season, and he has been issued the third seed. He placed third a year ago as the #3 seed. The fourth seed is junior Myles Krzewinski of Notre Dame. He qualifies for the State Tournament for the first time with a record of 18-10 this season. Freshman Teddy Wong of Dominican/ Eastbrook Academy qualifies this season as the fifth seed with an 11-2 mark. Junior Johnny Horak of Xavier advanced to the quarterfinals last season as the sixth seed and has been issued the sixth seed again this year with a 21-7 record. He qualified as a freshman in 2017 and advanced to the second round before being eliminated from title contention. Sophomore Andrew Larson of Pius XI Catholic is the #7 seed with his 20-6 record this season, and senior Nicholas Harron of Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic is the eight seed with a 16-4 record this year. He was half of a tandem that qualified and advanced to the quarterfinals in the doubles bracket last season. Sophomore Tayte Matthews of Brookfield Academy qualifies for the first time in singles play with a 13-3 record, but he has quality State experience after winning the doubles championship last season.
DIVISION 2 DOUBLES OUTLOOK: Juniors John Ewing and Chris Perry of Shorewood have been granted the top seed in the bracket with an undefeated 23-0 mark. Ewing gained valuable State Tournament experience last season with a different partner and finished sixth. The combo of senior William Schneider and freshman Alan Schneider of Notre Dame form the #2-seeded duo. They have a 20-3 record heading into tournament play. The elder Schneider qualified as a singles player in 2017 and advanced to the second round. The Sauk Prairie duo of junior Kelby Mack and junior Noah Wankerl are the third seed with a 13-1 record this season. Mack teamed with a different partner the past two seasons and qualified for State. He finished third last season and won a first-round match in 2017. Senior Josh Janssen and junior Christian Remington comprise Notre Dame’s second duo in the top four seeds at #4. They have posted a 25-4 record this season. Seniors Mikey Long and Hansen Zaiser of Brookfield Academy have been issued the fifth seed with a 15-3 mark this year. Zaiser qualified with a different partner last season and fell in the first round. Senior Matthew Cooper and junior Addison Elliot of University School are making their third straight appearance in the State doubles competition. The sixth-seeded tandem possesses a 10-6 mark entering the tournament. They finished fourth last year after having won a match before falling out of title contention with a loss in the second round in 2017. Juniors Ryan Matoska and Elijah Krause of Catholic Memorial are seeded #7 with an 18-7 record. Krause qualified with a different partner last season and fell in the first round. Seniors Joe Remschak and Jack Stamper of Whitnall are seeded eighth with a 12-5 mark this year.
