The first day of the 46th WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament produced clear leaders in the team competitions at University Ridge in Madison Monday.
Last year’s runner-up Arrowhead has a 26-stroke lead in Division 1 after the first day with a four-player score of 308 through 18 holes. Middleton is second at 334, and Onalaska is a stroke back in third at 335.
Senior Alexis Thomas of Middleton is 4-under-par with a score of 68 through the first 18 holes after placing fourth last season. Sophomore Emily Lauterbach of Arrowhead is two strokes back with a 2-under-par 70. She tied for 13th last season.
The Prairie School, the defending champion in Division 2, has a 34-stroke advantage with a score of 333 heading into Day 2. Aquinas is second after Day 1 with a 367, and Spooner is third at 368.
Senior Lori Meyer of Freedom, who placed fifth last season, leads Division 2 individuals with a 2-over-par 74 after 18 holes. Meyer placed fifth last season and tied for sixth in 2014. Senior Sarah Busey of Racine St. Catherine’s, who finished third two years ago, is in second place a stroke behind at 75.
Play continues at University Ridge at 8 a.m. Tuesday with Division 1 teams and individuals. Division 2 teams and individuals begin at 8:50 a.m.
