State Track & Field Championships Recap

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The 2019 State Boys and Girls Track & Field Championships produced eight team champions and 117 event champions at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex Friday and Saturday.

Kimberly won the Division 1 boys team championship for the third consecutive year by accumulated 46 points, and Waukesha North was runner-up with 39 points. In Division 2, Freedom earned the title with 48.5 points, and 2018 champion Rice Lake finished second with 47 points. Aquinas was the team champion in Division 3 with 58 points, 15 more than runner-up Wild Rose with 43.

Muskego won the Division 1 girls team title with 51 points, and Divine Savior Holy Angels came in second with 49 points. Wisconsin Lutheran won the Division 2 crown with 49 points, and Freedom placed second with 42.5 points. In Division 3, Aquinas finished three points ahead of Edgar in the team tite chase with 36 points. The girls wheelchair team title was won by Racine Horlick with 40 points, and Tomah placed second with 16 points.

Chippewa Falls won the boys wheelchair championship for the second straight year by compiling 50 points. Columbus Catholic was second with 36 points.

The meet was highlighted by 13 record performances. In Division 1, freshman Roisin Willis of Stevens Point shattered the State Meet record in winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:05.68, and senior Kiara Lee of Madison won the triple jump crown for the second year in a row, recording a record distance of 41-0 3/4. The Racine Horlick boys 400 relay of senior Darion Folsom, senior Khalil McLain, junior Mike Weaver and senior Marty Bell won the 400 relay after setting the event record in the prelims with a time of 41.38. Senior Drew Bosley won the 3,200 run for the second straight season, establishing a new record with a time of 8:57.70.

Senior Mackenzie Heyroth of Lodi set a pair of records in Division 2. She won the 100 hurdles in 14.36 and the 300 hurdles with a time 43.61. In addition, freshman Sylvia Johansen of Clinton raced to the title in the 100 dash in a record time of 11.95. On the boys side, the Freedom 800 relay team of junior Gavin Hafemann, senior Bryce Vandenberg, senior Luke Pingel and senior Ty Brickner set the meet record with a time of 1:27.52 to win the event.

Sophomore Jessica Brueggeman of Royal won the Division 3 triple jump in record fashion, posting a jump of 38-9 3/4, and senior Haley Durst won her second straight 100 dash time in the record-setting time of 12.12. Sophomore Lukas Beck of Aquinas was a two-time boys record setter. He raced to the title in the 100 dash with a time of 10.73, and he was a member of the winning 800 relay with junior Bryant Meyer, senior Jackson Mashak and senior Evan Weber that turned in a record time of 1:28.88.

There were a number of individuals that were champions in multiple events, including five three-event champions and one four-event champion. Junior Amari Brown of Milwaukee King won three Division 1 girls titles, including the 100 dash, 200 dash and the 400 relay. In addition to the record-setting wins in the 100 and 300 hurdles in Division 2, Heyroth was also a member of the winning 1,600 relay for Lodi. Senior Adam Rzentkowski of Rosholt accomplished the impressive feat of winning the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 runs in Division 3, and Lukas Beck of Aquinas won the Division 3 200 and 400 dashes, as well as the 800 relay. Sophomore Noah Eckelberg claimed three titles by winning the boys wheelchair 400, 800 and 1,600 races.

Sophomore Gabi Berthiaume of Racine Horlick was the only four-time winner, winning the girls wheelchair 100, 400, 1,600 and shot put.

There were also 19 repeat champions in the meet, including junior Hannah Constable of Johnson Creek who won her third title in the Division 3 800 run and the Muskego boys 800 relay team, which won for the third straight year.
