GRAND CHUTE, Wis. – Webster (29-0) remained undefeated in a battle of last year’s champions in the Division 4 semifinals with a 4-3 victory over 2018 champion Athens (18-5).
The Tigers, the 2018 Division 3 champion, never trailed in the game after scoring a run in the first inning on a RBI single by Owen Washburn to score Carsen Stenberg, who led off the game with a double. Webster added a run in the third, and the Fighting Bluejays got on the board with a run in the fourth.
Both teams scored two runs in sixth inning. Brad Sigfrids doubled in a run and Coleton Peterson added a run-scoring single to give Webster a 4-1 lead. Athens scored two unearned runs in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Hunter Rosenbaum and Peterson led the 12-hit Tigers’ attack with three hits apiece, and Rosenbaum earned the win on the mound, giving up one earned run on nine hits with nine strikeouts in six innings. Jack Washburn pitched the last inning in relief to record the save.
Mineral Point (27-0) also remained undefeated this season following it s 6-2 win over Belmont (17-9) in the semifinals.
Liam Stumpf led the Pointers at the plate and on the mound. He tallied the first of two runs scored by the Pointers in the first inning. He homered to lead off the third inning to give Mineral Point a 3-0 advantage. After Belmont scored in the fourth, Stumpf scored again in the fourth inning on a squeeze play. The Pointers scored two insurance runs in the sixth on Stumpf’s two-run triple.
He also was credited with the victory on the mound for the Pointers. He pitched five innings, giving up three hits and one unearned run while striking out 11. Justin Baehler tossed the final two innings in relief for the Pointers.
