Board of Control Approves 8-Player Football Alignment; Elects Officers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Dennis Birr, superintendent of the New Lisbon School District, presided over the first meeting of the 2019-20 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control today.

Fall Sport Seasons in Progress

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Today marks the start of fall sports with the first day of football practice at schools statewide following yesterday’s issuing of equipment.

40-Second Play Clock, State Option for Postseason Instant Replay Among Football Changes

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 11, 2019) — In an effort to establish a more consistent time period between downs in high school football, the play clock will start at 40 seconds instead of 25 seconds in many cases beginning with the 2019 season. 

Board Approves New Conference Realignment Process, Fall Sports Changes

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control unanimously approved a task force recommendation to revamp the conference realignment process, and voted on changes to the fall sports season regulations at its Jan. 30 meeting.

8-Player Programs with 3-Year Average Enrollment - For 2019 and 2020

Only schools with a three-year enrollment average of 200 or less are eligible for the playoff series.

The WIAA sponsored reduced-player football prior to the advent of the football playoff system in 1976. There were 78 schools that fielded reduced-player squads in the late 1950s, 72 of which were eight-player teams and six that were six-player. However, that number dwindled to just a few programs by 1969.
