Boys Volleyball History

The WIAA sponsored boys volleyball as a tournament sport in the spring from 1947 until 1967, and in 1968 moved to a fall season. The sport was dropped in 1983 because of the low number of participating schools. In 1991, boys volleyball again received WIAA recognition as a sponsored sport, but the championship tournament series did not resume again until 2000.

Madison West won the first championship held in Madison in 1947. Since then, the tournament has been held in numerous locations including Antigo, Burlington, Green Bay, Kaukauna, Neenah, Oshkosh, Portage, Waukesha, Wauwatosa, Whitefish Bay and Wisconsin Dells. In 2008, the State Tournament moved from Waukesha West High School, where it had been held since 2000, to Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee. The tournament moved to Green Bay in 2019 to coincide with the girls tournament at the Resch Center. In 2020, the tournament was held at Burlington High School amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The alternate season in 2020-21 was conducted the spring of 2021 and featured one division with 16 teams. The State Tournament consisted of a final only that was held at Kaukauna.

The State Tournament has featured one division of eight qualifying teams. Reseeding at the State Tournament level began in 2012 with the top four seeds randomly matched against one of four unseeded teams. In 2019, all eight teams at State were seeded for the first time. In 2020 during the COVID accommodations, six teams qualified with the top two seeds received first-round byes.

Marquette has won more titles than any other school in the membership with 10. Kaukauna and Waukesha, before that district divided into separate high schools, are tied for having the second-most championships with nine. All of Marquette's 10 titles have come since 2002. Each of Kaukauna's titles have come after 1967 when the volleyball season was held strictly as a fall sport and all but one has come prior to the reinstatement of the Tournament Series in 2000. Waukesha's championships came during an 11-year period from 1951 to 1961. Wisconsin High School of Madison and West Allis Hale have won three titles.

Waukesha holds the distinction for having won the most consecutive championships. The program won five straight titles from 1957-61. In addition, Waukesha is also the only program to win three straight championships (1951-53). There are a number of programs that have won the championship two years in a row, including Marquette, which has accomplished the feat three times (2004-05, 2007-08, 2013-14) and Kaukauna, which has done it twice (1969-70, 1977-78).

Kaukauna and Marquette have appeared in the most State Tournaments with 23. Waukesha, before it split into separate schools, played in 17. Catholic Memorial and Middleton are next on the list of appearances by participating in 15 tournaments, followed by Wauwatosa East with 12 and then Wisconsin High with 11.
