Repeat Champions, Drobac's Record Run Highlight Cross Country Championships

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. – Teams and individuals earned titles in three divisions at the 2024 Boys & Girls State Cross Country Championships at The Ridges Golf Course Saturday.

Kohler, the team champion in Division 3 the past two seasons, moved up to win the boys Division 2 championship this season with a five-runner score of 77. West Salem finished in second place with 114 points.

Senior Jack Hefty of Whitewater ran to the Division 2 boys individual championship, improving on his 13-place effort last year with a 5-kilometer time of 15:46.5. Senior Owen Lencki of Waupaca placed runner-up with a time of 15:51.6.

Kohler also won the Division 3 girls team championship, finishing with a score of 95 to win the program’s first State team title. Aquinas finished three points behind in second place with a score of 98 points.

Senior Mallory Kohn of Dodgeland earned Division 3 individual medalist honors by covering the 5-kilometer course in a time of 18:08.4, which is the second-fastest time recorded in Division 3 history. She earns the title after placing sixth last year. Sophomore Maggie Behler of Kohler was runner-up second straight year, finishing with a time of 18:20.4, which is the third-swiftest performance in Division 3 history.

University School of Milwaukee captured the program’s first girls championship by winning the Division 2 title. The Wildcats finished with 60 points, and Bloomer scored 80 to finish runner-up for the second year in a row.

Junior Emmerson Drobac of Deerfield/Cambridge won the girls Division 2 with a time of 17:38.9, which set an all-time State Meet record in all divisions for 5-kilometers. This comes on the heels of a fifth-place finish a year ago. Sophomore Ciara Hartman of Bloomer came in second with a time of 17:43.2 after placing third last season. Her time also eclipsed the former meet record for all divisions.

Cedar Grove-Belgium won its second State boys team championship in the program’s history, capturing the Division 3 team title with 98 points after finishing third last year. Prentice/Rib Lake finished second this season with 126 points.

Senior Declan Gregg of Aquinas ran to the boys Division 3 individual championship with a time of 15:52.7 after finishing 11th last year. His time ranks sixth-best on the all-time in Division 3. Senior Taylor Karcz of Crandon was second for the second consecutive season, completing the course in a time of 15:59.0.

Stevens Point Area Senior High raced to the boys Division 1 team championship for the third straight season and for the 14th time in program history. The Panthers finished with a score of 77 points. Marquette finished a distant second in the team standings with 129 points.

Senior Manny Putz of Onalaska become the seventh boy in State Meet history to earn the individual medalist honors three times. He captured the crown by racing to a time of 15:07.5, which ranks fifth-best to Meet history. In addition to his three gold medals, Putz placed seventh in 2021. Senior Grady Lenn of De Pere placed second with a time of 15:09.2 after placing third a year ago.

Neenah was the Division 1 girls team champion with a five-runner score of 57 to record the program’s fourth State championship after placing runner-up last season. Wauwatosa East finished second in the team standings with a score of 123.

Junior Ella Anschutz Muskego won the girls individual championship in Division 1 for the second year in a row, finishing the race in 18:04.5. She also ran to a sixth-place standing her freshman season in 2022. Freshman Izzy Decabooter of Verona was runner-up with a time of 18:14.2.
