State Girls Golf Championships Preview

THE STATE MEET:  The 47th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls State Golf Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 8-9, at the University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wis. Competition will begin at 8 a.m. on both days. Sunday practice tee time assignments are available on the girls golf homepage of the WIAA website.

STATE MEET STREAMED LIVE:  The ninth and 18th holes of the WIAA State Girls Golf Championships will be streamed live without subscription on the NFHS Network at nfhsnetwork.com/associations/wiaa-wi or WIAA.tv.

THE FORMAT:  The competition features a two division format with 12 teams and an additional 18 individual qualifiers competing in Division 1, and six teams and an additional nine individual qualifiers participating in Division 2. Competitors play 36 holes, weather permitting, including 18 holes on each day. The lowest scores from the first day will have the later tee times Tuesday.

TEAMS COMPETING:  The schools qualifying for the State meet in Division 1 are Arrowhead, Badger, Bay Port, Brookfield Central, Cedarburg, Kaukauna, Kettle Moraine, Middleton, Milton, New Richmond, Onalaska, and Waunakee. The team qualifiers in Division 2 are Arcadia, Edgewood, Hayward, Luxemburg-Casco, Northwestern and Xavier.

HOW THEY QUALIFIED:  The Division 1 field consists of the top two teams from each of the six sectionals, and the Division 2 field includes the top two teams from three sectionals. Eighteen individuals in Division 1 and nine individuals in Division 2 qualify as the top three players in each sectional that are not members of a qualifying team.

DIVISION 1 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The 18 individuals who have qualified for the State meet in Division 1 are senior Olivia Reichardt of Appleton East, junior Rylie Severson of Ashwaubenon, junior Carly Moon of Baraboo, senior Kendra Swanson of Beaver Dam, junior Meredith Boos of Catholic Memorial, junior Ellie Schneider of De Pere, senior Lexi Meade of Eau Claire Memorial, senior Sydney Brown of Eau Claire North, junior Mallory Swartz of Franklin, sophomore Kallie Lux of Janesville Craig, senior Sophia Dooman of Janesville Parker, senior Klairissa O’Reilly-Dye of Monona Grove, junior Grace Suter of Oconomowoc, junior Abby Nickel of Stevens Point, sophomore Caylie Kotlowski of Stoughton, sophomore Veronica Parco of Union Grove, junior Rachel Kauflin of Wauwatosa East/West, and senior Lauren Craig of West Bend West/East.

DIVISION 2 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The nine individual qualifiers in Division 2 are senior Annie Balduzzi of Aquinas, senior Kennedy Patrick of Clayton, junior Abby DeMoe of Colfax, seniors Makenzie Suhr and Maddie Perkins of Edgerton, senior Elizabeth Santos of Fox Valley Lutheran, sophomore Maya Heckmann of Lakeside Lutheran, senior Katie Gerschke of St. Thomas More, and junior Haley Myers of Somerset.
LAST YEAR:  Arrowhead captured the Division 1 State team title for the second straight season with a 36-hole score of 630. Milton was runner-up at 657, and Brookfield Central was third at 664. Mia Seeman of Milton was the individual medalist with a score of 145. Abby Cavaiani of Kettle Moraine finished second with a score of 147. Aquinas won the Division 2 crown, finishing with a score of 717. Edgewood placed second with a score of 732. Erika Priebe of Fox Valley Lutheran won individual medalist honors by shooting a 160. Emily Neff of Hayward placed second with a 162.

INDIVIDUAL PREVIEW-DIVISION 1:  Senior  Emily Lauterbach of Arrowhead returns hoping to return to medalist form in pursuit of her second individual championship. She placed third last season after winning the title in 2016. Sophomore Jo Baranczyk of Bay Port looks to contend for the title after placing fifth as a freshman last season. Junior Holly Murphy of Badger tied Baranczyk for fifth last season and has qualified again to embark on her quest for a State title. Among the sectional champions competing to be in the mix for medalist honors are senior Lexi Meade of Eau Claire Memorial, who placed 16th a year ago; junior Rachel Kauflin of Wauwatosa East/West, and sophomore Caylie Kotlowski of Stoughton. 

INDIVIDUAL PREVIEW-DIVISION 2:  Five of the top 10 finishers from a year ago return to contend for the individual championship. Senior Emily Neff of Hayward is the top returning qualifier after finishing runner-up for the title last season. Junior Grace Welch of Edgewood should challenge for the title following a fifth-place finish last year and a third-place standing as a freshman in 2016. Senior Annie Balduzzi of Aquinas could be among the contenders again this year after finishing sixth last season, fourth in 2016 and  13th in 2015. Senior Katie Gerschke of St. Thomas More has qualified for the second time after placing eighth a year ago, and sophomore Caitlyn Hegenbarth of Edgewood sets out to improve on her 10th-place finish at last year’s State championships. Other qualifiers that could contend for the title based on their sectional championship performances are senior Clair Phakamad of Xavier, who won the Xavier Sectional, and junior Kiernan Smith of Northwestern, who tied Neff for medalist honors at the Hayward Sectional.

THROUGH THE YEARS:  In the first 46 years of the girls golf championships, Edgewood has won the most team championships with 13, all coming since 2001. The Crusaders won two championships when only one division was offered in 2001-02 and the first seven Division 2 titles from 2003-09. They added to their total with championships from 2011-14. Madison West and La Crosse Central are tied for the second-most team titles with five. The Regents won the first five championships offered from 1972-76. The Red Raiders won four consecutive State titles from 1990-93 and added their fifth in 1998. Appleton West, Arrowhead and Homestead have won four team championships. Osceola has crowned the most individual medalists with eight, and Madison Memorial is next in line with six individual champions.
