Edgewood Wins Div. 2 Girls Swimming & Diving Title

Edgewood was crowned the Division 2 team champion for the second year in a row at the 2016 State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships at the Natatorium on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus Friday.

Ginger Lingard of Edgewood became just the third diver in State Meet history to win four consecutive championships. She captured the crown with a score of 498.90. Teammate Kelly Rodriquez defended the title she won last year in the 200-yard freestyle by winning the event this year with a time of 1:49.41. Rodriquez was also a champion as a member of the victorious 200 and 400 freestyle relays.  Kaitlyn Barth, Maeve O’Driscoll and DeeDee Walker joined Rodriquez on the 200 freestyle relay to post a winning time of 1:36.30. She teamed up with Issy Petersen, Lauren Bergmann and Kaitlyn Barth in the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:27.97.

Autumn Haebig of Grafton became the first swimmer to win a fourth State championship in the 500 freestyle. She cruised to the title in a record time of 4:47.79. Haebig also repeated as champion in the 100 backstroke with a Division 2 meet-record time of 54.65. In addition, she won a third gold medal as a member of the winning 200 medley relay. She teamed with Emma O’Brien, Mallory Fox and Olivia Konzen to win the event with a time of 1:46.13. Fox also added to her accomplishments by winning the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.46.

Alexandra Moderski of McFarland wins her second consecutive title in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.09 after setting the meet record in winning the event last season.

Kiah Francis of Rhinelander earned titles in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke after  with times of 2:03.30 and 1:04.09, respectively, after finishing runner-up a year ago and in both those events. Jenna Silvestri of the Kohler co-op will share the title with Francis in the 100 breaststroke with the two finishing at the same time.

Bella Passamani of New Berlin Eisenhower won the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.27. 

McFarland finished a distant second in the team standings with 224 points, and Grafton finished third with 180 points. 

The Division 1 championships begin Saturday at 10 a.m. with the diving competition at the Natatorium in Madison. The swimming finals begin at 3 p.m.
