Star power at the State Girls Division 1 Swimming & Diving Championships was on display Saturday at the UW Natatorium in Madison.

Arrowhead won the team championship for the 11th time with a score of 301 points. Middleton finished runner-up with 211 points, and Cedarburg was third with 206 points.

Seniors Beata Nelson of Verona/Mount Horeb and Katie Drabot of Cedarburg turned in standout performances in their final State meets.

Nelson was a four-time champion. She won the 100 backstroke for the fourth straight year with a record time of 52.13, and she won the 100 butterfly for the third year in a row, setting another State meet record with a time of 51.62. 

Nelson was also a member of the Verona/Mount Horeb 200 medley relay team with Caroline Smith, Grace Bennin and Kristi Larsen that snapped Arrowhead’s string of titles in the event at six with a winning time of 1:43.96. In addition, Bennin, Larsen, Nelson and Maizie Seidl captured the crown in the 200 freestyle relay for the third consecutive season with a time of 1:33.97.

Drabot won three events. She won her third straight championship in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.21, eclipsing the record time she set last year. She also shattered the record in the 100 freestyle, winning with a time of 48.55. 

Drabot was also the anchor on the 400 freestyle relay that finished first in a time 3:23.49 with teammates Skylar Fore, Lillie Hosack and Daniella Peters. Also notable was Drabot’s performance as the lead leg of the 200 freestyle relay which placed sixth. She broke the 50 freestyle record set earlier in the meet by Arrowhead’s Kelly Jacobs with her split time of 22.64. Hosack added another title for the Bulldogs with a win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.51.

Senior Kelly Jacob of Arrowhead repeated as the gold-medal winner in the 50 freestyle and set the State record in the process with a time of 22.84. That record was only temporary, however, as Drabot bettered the mark with her effort on the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay.

Junior Lauren Stigler of Muskego was the champion in the 100 breaststroke after placing third a year ago, finishing in a time of 1:02.97

Senior Cassy Jernberg of Milwaukee King/Washington swam to the title in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.93, and Junior Tatum Thompkins of Racine Case won the diving competition with a score of 466.50 after placing fifth in the event last year.
