Girls Volleyball History

The WIAA began sponsoring a tournament series in girls volleyball in 1973. Shawano won the first state team championship with West Allis Hale finishing runner-up.

The first two State Tournaments were held at Neenah. The tournament was then moved to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Kolf Fieldhouse from 1975 to 1993 before returning to Neenah in 1994. In 2002, the State Tournament moved to its current home, the Resch Center in Green Bay.

In 2020, the State Tournaments were conducted at four different sites during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sites were Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School for Division 1, Kaukauna High School for Division 2, Wausau West High School for Division 3 and Little Chute High School for Division 4. The alternate season in 2020-21 was conducted the spring of 2021 and featured two divisions. The semifinals were held at Beaver Dam and Kettle Moraine and the finals of both divisions were held at Kaukauna.

The tournament format featured eight qualifying teams in Division 1 and four teams in Divisions 2, 3 and 4 until 2024 when a fifth division with four teams qualifying was added. In 2020, there were only four teams qualifying in Division 1 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The State Tournament was seeded for the first time in Division 1 in 2018 and for all teams in 2019.

The Tournament Series followed the three division A-B-C format, except for the first year in 1973 when there was only one class. Terminology was changed from classes to divisions in 1990 when the tournament format changed to four divisions of competition.
