Baseballs without the SEI/NOCASAE stamp

Q:  If, a school does not have baseballs with the SEI/NOCASAE seal on them – can you still play the game?  Also, a school may have several dozen balls without that seal and want to use them up – what do we as umpires do?

A: The manufacturers have been stamping the ball for quite some time.  So I would imagine that most will have the NOCSAE logo.  The rule was put in place to standardize baseballs.  It’s my understanding that it was not put into place as a safety rule.  I’ve sent out many emails and had the rule reviewed in the rules video the last several years.  With that said, we would tell you to play the game and report it to the office.  Tell the coach that the appropriate baseball should be used in the next game.
