Use of Eye Black

Q.:  What are umpires supposed to do if a player wears eyeblack in a manner inconsistent with the manufacture’s design (i.e., not a single line under the eye).

A.:  Regarding eye black, the eye black rule is only a football rule.  We are reminding the umps to look for foreign substances on the ball or if it is offensive as the only way with the current rules to address it. Beyond that, there is no restriction to the amount of eye black that a player uses within the current rules.
