State Girls Soccer Tournament Preview

THE TOURNAMENT:  The 37th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Soccer Tournament will take place Thursday-Saturday, June 13-15, at KOHLER Engines Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, Wis. Ticket prices are $8 per session and $1 for children 6-years old or younger. Tickets are available at the venue.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION: The single-elimination tournament features four teams in each of the four divisions. Below are the seeds, pairings and time schedule of games.

Division 1

Friday, June 14
#1 Waunakee (18-2-2) vs. #4 Muskego (15-4-2) - 11 a.m.
#2 Bay Port (21-2) vs. #3 Divine Savior Holy Angels (13-6-4) - 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 15

Game 2 of each session are scheduled approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.

SEMIFINAL GAMES STREAMED LIVE:  The semifinals of all four divisions of the WIAA State Girls  Soccer Tournament will be streamed live on the WIAA.TV portal of the NFHS Network on a consumer subscription basis. To purchase a subscription to the live programming, log-on to www.wiaa.tv or www.nfhsnetwork.com and click on the subscription image near the top of the page.

FINALS AIRED LIVE ON FS WISCONSIN:  Watch the WIAA State Girls Soccer Tournament finals of all four divisions live on either FS Wisconsin or FS Wisconsin Plus. The Division 3 championship final will be aired at 11 a.m. on FS Wisconsin, and the Divisions 2 and 1 title games will be aired on FS Wisconsin Plus at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. The Division 4 final will air on FS Wisconsin at 7 p.m. Check local cable listings for the channel in your area. The tournament finals will also be streamed live on the FoxSportGo.com. Authenticate with your provider’s username and password to access the streams.

TOURNEY NOTES:  Catholic Memorial has captured the State crown a membership-leading 10 times. Whitefish Bay has won eight titles, and Brookfield Central has won six championships with Madison West possessing five titles. Divine Savior Holy Angels, Homestead and Ozaukee have each claimed four championships. Whitefish Bay now has 20 State Tournament appearances to lead all programs. Neenah and Catholic Memorial have qualified 15 times with Brookfield Central qualifying 14 times. Next on the list are Madison Memorial, Madison West and Notre Dame with 12, and Homestead and Xavier have qualified for the tourney 11 times. 

LAST YEAR:  Bay Port was crowned champion in Division 1 with a 3-1 victory over Sheboygan North in the title game.  Brookfield Central won the Division 2 championship with a 2-0 shutout victory over Oregon in the championship game. In Division 3, Notre Dame put an end to a six-year run of championships for Catholic Memorial by blanking the Crusaders 1-0 in the championship final. Kenosha St. Joseph was the champion in Division 4 following a 2-1 win over Cedar Grove-Belgium in the title game.

DIVISION 1 NOTES:  Last year’ champion Bay Port returns to the tourney field this season with the #2 seed. The Pirates are making their fifth State appearance overall and their third in a row. In 2017, they advanced to the championship game and finished runner-up. The Pirates were runners-up in the Fox River Classic Conference this spring. They continue their string of tourney appearances with a 1-0 victory over Kimberly in the Kaukauna Sectional final. Waunakee has been issued the top seed. The Warriors are making their third appearance in the State Tournament and their first since 2014 when they won the Division 2 championship. They also advanced to the Division 1 championship game in 2008 and finished runner-up. The Warriors return to the Division 1 qualifying field following a 3-2 win over Middleton in the Kettle Moraine Sectional final. They finished first in the North Division of the Badger Conference this season.  Divine Savior Holy Angels is seeded third in the bracket. The Dashers qualify for the State Tournament for the ninth time overall and for first time since winning the championship in 2016. They also won the title in 2014 and back-to-back championships in 2008-09, giving them four gold trophies. This season, they tied Brookfield Central and Germantown for the top spot in the Greater Metro Conference standings. The Dashers advance to the State semifinals through the Germantown Sectional via a 5-4 shootout following a 1-1 tie against Arrowhead. Fourth-seeded Muskego has qualified for the sixth year in a row, which also accounts for the Warriors’ overall total. They are attempting to advance beyond the semifinal round of the State Tournament for the first time. The Warriors blanked Kenosha Bradford/Reuther 4-0 in the sectional final held at Muskego to earn the trip to Uihlein. They finished third in the Classic Eight Conference this season.

DIVISION 2 NOTES:  Top-seeded Whitefish Bay is making its membership-leading 20th appearance in the State Tournament and its first since 2017 when the Blue Dukes captured their eighth State title. Four of their titles have come in Division 2 from 1998-2000 and again in 2017, and four came prior to expanding the tournament to more than one division (1983-85, 1994). They have also claimed runner-up finishes in 1997, 2001 and 2005. The Blue Dukes downed Waukesha West 4-0 in the New Berlin Eisenhower Sectional final to advance to the tournament field. They are the North Shore Conference champions this spring. Last year’s runner-up  Oregon, the second seed, is back in the State Tournament for the fifth consecutive season, which also accounts for the their overall total. Three of their previous experiences ended in the championship game with a title in 2015 and runner-up finishes in 2016 and 2018. Their return to the tournament comes following a 1-0 victory over Sauk Prairie in the McFarland Sectional final. They are the champions in the South Division of the Badger Conference this year. Third-seeded Brookfield East is making its fourth appearance and its first since 2008. The Spartans won the State championship in 1989 before the divisional format. They finished eighth in the Greater Metro Conference this season, which was won by Division 1 qualifier Divine Savior Holy Angels and last season’s Division 2 champion Brookfield Central. Their advance to the State semifinals comes following a 1-0 victory over Cedarburg in the Plymouth Sectional. Marshfield, the fourth seed, will experience the State Tournament for the first time. The Tigers are the champions of the Eau Claire Memorial Sectional, advancing with a 2-1 win over Onalaska in the final. They finished fourth in the Wisconsin Valley Conference this season.

DIVISION 3 NOTES:  Defending champion and third-seeded Notre Dame qualifies for the 12th time and for the fourth time in the past five seasons. In addition to the title they won in 2018, the Tritons have been State runners-up four times. They fell in the Division 2 finals in 2002, 2003 and 2011, and in Division 3 in 2015. This season, they are the champions of the Wrightstown Sectional with a 2-1 win over Xavier in the final. The Tritons placed fourth in the Fox River Classic Conference standings this spring. Catholic Memorial won an impressive six straight championships before having their unprecedented streak snapped last year with a runner-up finish. The first two championships of the string of titles came in Division 2  in 2012 and 2013, and the last four came in Division 3 from 2014 to 2017. The Crusaders have a membership-leading 10 championships. They have also had three runner-up finishes. Those came in 2008, 2009 and again last year. Prior to joining the WIAA, Catholic Memorial won three WISAA titles and finished runner-up once. The Crusaders edged Grafton 2-1 in the sectional final hosted by the Crusaders to remain in contention for their 11th championship. They finished runner-up in the Classic Eight Conference this season.  Edgewood will be making its sixth overall appearance in the tournament and its first since 2017. The Crusaders  have won two State championships. Both of those came in Division 2 in 2009 and 2011. They also advanced to the State final in 2006 and finished runner-up. Prior to joining the WIAA, they were runners-up in WISAA in 1987. They will contend for their third championship after a 1-0 win over Belleville/New Glarus in the sectional final played at Edgewood. The Crusaders are the runners-up in the South Division of the Badger Conference behind Division 2 qualifier Oregon this spring. Fourth-seeded Ashland returns to the tournament bracket for the first time since a string of three appearances ended after the 2015 season. The Oredockers qualify for the fourth time overall, and they are attempting to advance past the semifinals for the first time. They cruised past Medford 5-0 in the Eau Claire Memorial Sectional final to return to State. The Oredockers are the champions of the Great Northern Conference this year.

DIVISION 4 NOTES:  The Prairie School, the top seed in the bracket, will be participating in the State Tournament for the first time since 2016 and for the seventh time overall. The Hawks won the Division 4 championship that season after finishing runners-up five times in Division 3, including 2003, 2004, 2010, 2012 and 2013. They defeated Kenosha St. Joseph 6-1 in the sectional final hosted by the Hawks. They are the champions of the Metro Classic Conference this spring. Second-seeded Oostburg makes its third appearance in the State Tournament and the first since 2016. The Lady Dutch were eliminated from title contention in the semifinals that season and in Division 3 in 2012. Their return comes as a result of a 1-0 shutout over Kohler in the Valders Sectional final. They placed runner-up in the Big East Conference this year.  St. Mary Catholic is the third seed. The Zephyrs are making their ninth overall appearance at State. They won the Division 3 State championship in 2007 and were runners-up in 2009. This season, they advance to the State semifinals by rolling past Northland Pines 10-1 in the sectional final the Zephyrs hosted. They finished fourth in the Big East Conference standings this season. Fourth-seeded Kettle Moraine Lutheran is back in the State Tournament for the third time and for the first time since 2011. The Chargers were the champions in Division 3 in each of their two previous State Tournament experiences in 2009 and 2011. This year, they placed third in the East Central Conference standings. The Chargers defeated Lake Country Lutheran/ University Lake 1-0 in the finals of the West Allis Central Sectional final to continue their quest for a third State title.
