State Track & Field Meet Produces Record Performances

The 119th running of the State Track & Field Championships concluded late Saturday evening following more than a five-hour weather delay.


There were 11 record-breaking performances over the two-day meet which featured 28 previous champions defending their titles.


Kimberly won the Division 1 boys team championship with 57 points, and Wisconsin Lutheran was second with 47 points. Kenosha Tremper won its second consecutive girls Division 1 championship with 48 points, and Brookfield East was runner-up with 40 points.


Monroe captured the Division 2 crown with 63 points. Seymour finished a distant second with 37 points. Hayward scored 38 point to edge Dodgeville/Mineral Point by a single point for the girls Division 2 championship.


McDonell Central won the boys Division 3 team title with 40 points, two ahead of runner-up Marathon, and Edgar’s run of Division 3 girls titles ends at four as Lourdes Academy celebrated the title with 50 points, Cuba City came in second with 46.


A number of remarkable milestones and performances highlighted the meet. Seniors Kennedy Blahnik of Algoma and Bonnie Draxler Wrightstown joined the list of four-time champions in two different events shared by only two other girls.


Blahnik won her fourth discus title in record fashion, setting the Division 3 standard with a toss of 161-5. She won the shot put with a mark of 48-8. Draxler won her fourth pole vault title with an all-division record height of 13-3. She won her fourth 400-meter dash championship with a time of 56.16, and she added her second straight 100 dash title with a time of 12.19. She ties three other girls for the most titles won in a career with 10.


Jessica and Jennifer Parker of Neenah ran to the fourth championship in their careers as members of the 3,200 relay team. The relay won the title with a time of 9:10.97.


Ethan Moehn of Monroe won a rare three titles in the distances, winning the trifecta in the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs with times of 1:52.16, 4:09.56 and 9:15.02, respectively. His time in the 1,600 set the Division 2 State Championships record in the event. The accomplishment comes on the heels of the winning the Division 2 cross country title last fall.


Senior Danielle Riggins of Kenosha Tremper won three events, including the 100 and 200 dashes and the 100 hurdles. She set a State Meet record in the hurdles with a time of 13.67, and clocked in at 11.85 and 23.99 to win the 100 and 200 dashes, respectively.


Senior Erick Huerta of Grafton won three events with Grafton moving down into Division 2 this year. After winning the Division 1 championship in the 400 dash last year, he capture the title in Division 2 this year with a time of 48.43 after he set the division record in the event at 47.86 in the prelims. Huertas as won the 200 dash with a time of 22.09 and was a member of the championship 1,600 relay with a time of 3:21.74, which set a Division 2 record in the prelims with a time of 3:19.04.


Senior Nick Zander of McDonell Central won both the 800 and 1,600 runs and was the anchor leg of the champion 3,200 relay in Division 3. He won the 800 with a time of 1:54.93, the 1,600 in a Division 3 record time of 4:11.65 and 8:04.75 in the relay.


Other record performances were turned in by senior Glen Harold of Brookfield East in the Division 1  pole vault at a height of 16-1, senior Daurice Fountain of Madison Memorial in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 14.04, senior Darin Lau of Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran in the 3,200 run with a time of 9:07.62, and the Wisconsin Lutheran 3,200 relay team at 7:39.39.
