Barneveld 58, Shullsburg 28
After making its first appearance at State last season, Barneveld (26-3) wins the programs first title with a 58-28 win over Shullsburg in the Division 5 title game of the 2017 State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Shullsburg cracked the scoreboard first, but the Golden Eagles quickly reponded with an 11-0 run to take an 11-2 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish.
Leading the 21-16 at the half, the Golden Eagles outscored the Miners 37-13 in the second half. Barneveld went on a 20-5 run at the start of the half and closed the game with a 10-0 run, holding the Miners scoreless in the final 3:30 of the game.
The Barneveld defense held the Miners to 25 percent shooting for the game and set the Division 5 for the fewest points allowed in a State Tournament game. The 30-point margin of victory also set a Division 5 record.
Mathew Myers led all scorers with 20 points for the Golden Eagles. Malcolm Reed tossed in 12 points, and Mike Zouski added 11. Noah Wand scored nine points to lead the Miners.
Shullsburg finishes runner-up in its second State Tournament appearance.
