Boys Hockey History

The WIAA began sponsoring a tournament program in boys hockey in 1971. Superior won the first championship, defeating Madison West, 7-3, in the championship game.

The first State Tournament was held at the Dane County Coliseum before it changed its name to Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. The Hartmeyer facility in Madison has been the site of some of the State Tournaments, but the Coliseum was used exclusively from 1980 to 2022. The tournament has been conducted in Madison every year except in 1974 and 1975 when it was held in Green Bay, and in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic when the just the championship finals were held at South Wood County Rink in Wisconsin Rapids. The semifinals were held at the home of the higher seeds. In 2023, the State Tournament moved to Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton.

The State Tournament Series expanded to two divisions for the first time in 2020. Four teams in each division qualified for the State Tournament. St. Mary's Springs was the first Division 2 champion.

Superior leads in most State championships won with 13. Madison Memorial has won eight titles, and Hudson has captured six. Madison East is next on the list with four titles.

Twenty different schools have won State championships. Superior is the only program to win three consecutive State titles (1994-96). Superior, Madison Memorial, Hudson and St. Mary's Springs and Notre Dame are the only programs to win back-to-back titles. Superior has done it twice including its string of three championships (1981-82) and Madison Memorial has accomplished this feat twice (1976-77, 1979-80) as has Hudson with its back-to-back titles in 2017-18 and then again in 2021-22. St. Mary's Springs won their two straight titles in 2020-21, and Notre Dame won consecutive championships in 2023-24.

Superior leads in State Tournament appearances with 38, and Madison Memorial is next with 30. Northland Pines is third on the list of appearances with 19, and Eau Claire Memorial has 18. Next on the list are Stevens Point and Wausau West, each have been to State 17 times. University School of Milwaukee is next with 16, and then Hudson and Madison East with 14. Fond du Lac has made 13 State appearances, and Madison West has participated in 12 State Tournaments.
