It’s deja vu with the 27th State Team Wrestling Tournament championship finals in Divisions 2 and 3 at the UW Field House in Madison after Saturday’s semifinals.
Ellsworth (16-6), the two-time defending champion in Division 2, has its sights on the third consecutive crown following a convincing 53-6 win over Chilton/Hilbert(16-7) in the semifinals. The Panthers won 12 of 14 bouts in the match, including five pins and four major decisions.
They advance to wrestle last year’s runner Luxemburg-Casco (21-0). The Spartans downed Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose-Mindoro 44-21 in their semifinal. They won 10 of the 14 weight classes, including pins by Nate Lloyd, Lucas Joniaux, Colton Worachek and Devan Vandenbush.
In Division 3, Stratford (21-0) returns to the finals for the third straight season in pursuit of its second consecutive team title. The Tigers rolled to a 47-12 victory over St. Croix Falls (18-1) in the semifinals. After dropping matches at 160 and 170 to begin the match, Stratford won 10 of the remaining 12 match-ups, including pins by Trevor Dennee, Max Schwabe, A.J. Schoenfuss, Jeremy Schoenherr and Dilan Dehlinger.
Their familiar opponent in the final is 2016 champion and last year’s runner-up Fennimore (17-2). The Golden Eagles claimed a 46-15 win over Random Lake in the semifinals. They had an impressive six pins en route to victories in nine of the 14 bouts in the match.
With Stoughton advancing to Saturday’s final in Division 1 from Friday’s quarterfinals and semifinals, there are five of the six teams that wrestling in last year’s finals in this year’s championship matches.
The Vikings will battle Holmen, which will be making its first-ever appearance in the State finals.
The championship matches in all three divisions are scheduled for 3 p.m. today.
