The 70th State Individual Wrestling Tournament concluded with the crowning of 42 champions at the Kohl Center in Madison Saturday evening.
Ten former champions added another title to their collection, including senior Jacob Morrissey of Oconto Falls and Lens Jantz of Ellsworth. Each won their third title. Morrissey finished the season as one of 14 undefeated wrestlers to win a championship this season. He went 44-0, and Jantz captured his third crown with a 42-5 mark.
Division 1 competitors winning their second title are senior Colin Baine of Wausau West, who went 50-0 this season; Andrew Crone of Arrowhead, who won the 103 championship in 2011; and senior Jake Stilling of Elkhorn, who retained his title at 170.
Repeat champions in Division 2 include senior Seth Liegel of River Valley at 152 with a 46-0 record and senior Newton Smerchek of Luxemburg-Casco at 285.
Junior Ethan Soderstrom of Lancaster won the 160-pound class in Division 3 after winning at 152 a year ago, and senior Luke Nowak of Edgar completed his championship campaign at 182 with a 45-0 record after winning the 170 title in 2012. Senior Cole Johnson of De Soto successfully defended his crown at 285 to cap a 47-0 season.
Other champions posting perfect records to complete the individual season in Division 1 are junior Jared Scharenbrock of Sun Prairie with a 46-0 record at 145, senior Aaron Rothwell of Sheboygan North with a 47-0 mark at 182, senior Eric Peissig of Menomonie with a record of 49-0 at 195 and junior Tyler Schmidt of Merrill with a 45-0 tally at 220.
In Division 2, senior Mitchell Friedman of Oconto Falls finished the season unscathed with a 44-0 record at 138, and senior Joey Dedick of East Troy went 46-0 to win the title at 195.
Other Division 3 champions to boast unblemished records are sophomore Kal Gerber of Cameron with a 47-0 record at 113, sophomore Devin Lemanski of Edgar with a 45-0 mark at 126 and senior Christian Moore of Royall with a 45-0 record at 220.
Edgar, Lancaster and Oconto Falls each claimed three individual titles, and Ellsworth, Luxemburg-Casco and Milton each boast two champions.
Wrestling resumes next week with the State Team Tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 1-2 at the UW Field House. Action begins with the Division 1 quarterfinals at 7 p.m.
