Five Girls Basketball Champions Crowned

Verona won its first State title in program history by defeating Mukwonago in the Division 1 final 52-46 Saturday evening at the Resch Center in Green Bay. New Berlin Eisenhower (23-5) captured the Division 2 State championship with a 46-42 win over Stoughton in the final Saturday evening at the Resch Center in Green Bay.  Hayward won its first championship with a 43-31 triumph over Milwaukee School of Languages in the Division 3 final Saturday afternoon at the Resch Center in Green Bay.  Mineral Point (26-2) capitalized on a strong second half to win the Division 4 State championship with a 68-52 victory of Kenosha St. Joseph Saturday afternoon at the Resch Center in Green Bay.  In the rematch featuring the same two teams that have played in the Division 5 title game the past three years, Assumption (25-4) defeated two-time defending champion Barneveld 62-45 to win the crown.

Loyal's Schoonover Wins Girls 3-Point Challenge

Devyn Schoonover, a senior from Loyal, won the 2016 girls 3-Point Challenge held Saturday morning at the Resch Center in conjunction with the State Girls Basketball Tournament.

Schoonover was one of 10 participants in the 3-Point Challenge, which was held for the first time last year. She scored 15 points in the final round to win the contest. Senior Abby Gerrits of Pewaukee was second with 14 points in the final round.

Schoonover scored 13 points in the opening round and 14 in the semifinals. Gerrits opened with 13 points and followed with 19 in the semifinals. Senior Madie Kaelber of Kenosha Indian Trail and senior Sara Winkel of Kiel also advanced to the semifinals with first-round totals of 14 and 13, respectively.  

Other participants were Macenzie Kraemer of Wisconsin Heights, Shemera Williams of the Milwaukee Academy of Science, Amira Erdmann of Crandon, Theresa Wichser of Brookfield Academy, Caroline Busch of Brookfield Central and Shay Frederick of Hortonville. 

The top two players per division were selected for the contest based on the best 3-point field goal percentage with a minimum of 75 attempts during the regular season.

Division 1, 2 & 5 Teams Advance to Saturday's Girls Basketball Finals

DIVISION 1

Mukwonago 49, Oak Creek 45

Mukwonago (24-3) returns to the Division 1 final for the second time in the last four seasons following a 49-45 victory over Oak Creek in the semifinals Friday evening at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Verona 69, Appleton North 41

Verona (24-3) turned in a record-shattering performance in downing Appleton North 69-41 in the Division 1 semifinals Friday evening at the Resch Center in Green Bay.


DIVISION 2

New Berlin Eisenhower 55, Notre Dame 45 (OT)

New Berlin Eisenhower (22-5) outlasted Notre Dame 55-45 in overtime in the semifinals Friday afternoon to advance to the final for the fourth time in the past six years. 

Stoughton 59, Onalaska 56

Stoughton (25-2) downed Onalaska 59-56 in the Division 2 semifinals Friday afternoon to move onto the championship final Saturday.

DIVISION 5

Assumption 63, Fall River 50

Assumption (24-4) advances to the final in Division 4 to play Barneveld for the fourth straight season following a 63-50 victory over Fall River in the semifinals Friday morning at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Barneveld 57, Clayton 46

Two-time defending champion Barneveld (28-0) will attempt to win its third straight title in Division 5 following a hard-fought 57-46 win over Clayton in the semifinals Friday morning at the Resch Center in Green Bay

State Girls Basketball Tournament Preview

The 41st Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Championships will take place Thursday-Saturday, March 10-12, at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis. 

Ticket price for the tourney is $10 per session when purchased at the Resch Center.
