Beaver Dam (28-0) capped a perfect season and captured its first State title by defeating Cudahy 52-33 in the Division 2 championship game at the Resch Center in Green Bay Saturday evening.
It appeared the Packers were poised to prevent the Golden Beavers from completing a perfect season by jumping out to a 10-0 lead. However, Beaver Dam increased the intensity of its full-court pressure, which led to 16 Cudahy turnovers in the half. The Golden Beavers outscored Cudahy 30-10 in the final 12 minutes of the first period to enter the locker room with a 30-20 lead.
The closest the Packers would get in the second half was six points at 30-26 two minutes into the period, but the Golden Beavers outscored Cudahy 12-3 over the next eight minutes to increase the lead to 15 and cruise to the victory. The Beaver Dam pressure induced 23 turnovers in the game that led directly to 20 points.
Tara Stauffacher and Aly Van Loo led the Golden Beavers with 12 points apiece, and Kara Crowley contributed 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Cassidy Trotter led the team in assists and steals with four and six, respectively.
Nicole Ferch was the only Cudahy player to score in double figures with 14 points.
The Golden Beavers add a title in their third appearance to go with a runner-up finish in 1991. Cudahy (20-8) places runner-up in the program’s first appearance in the State Tournament.
