The 12th WIAA Girls State Hockey Championship game between is in the record books and the Hayward Co-op is the State champion with a 5-2 win over the Onalaska Co-op Saturday,
After one period of play, Hayward led 2-0 thanks to pair of goals by Meredith Ingebretson. In the second period, Holly Turnbull added to Hayward lead with a goal. Another goal by Ingebretson gave her the “hat trick” and extended the Hayward lead to 4-0. Theresa Knutson of Onalaska scored on successive goals, one at 11:56 and again at 16:43 to cut the Hayward lead in half at 4-2.
In the third period of play, the only goal was scored by Hayward’s Annika Neerdaels.
Sarah Miley of Hayward had 21 save, and Jeanalyn Schindler of Onalaska stopped 20n shots. Hayward’s first title comes in its third trip to State.
