Arrowhead Wins Div. 1 Team Title; Six Records Set at State Girls Swimming & Diving Meet

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Arrowhead captured the Division 1 team championship and six records fell at the 2022 State Girls Swimming & Diving Championships at the Waukesha South High School Natatorium Saturday.

The Warhawks compiled 338.5 points to win the program’s 12th championship. Former three-time defending champion Brookfield East finished runner-up with 285.5 points, and the Waukesha West/Catholic Memorial co-op placed third with a score of 196.

Campbell Stoll of Arrowhead won a pair of events for the third time. She won the 200-yard individual medley for the third straight season to go with a runner-up finish in 2019. She swam the event in a Division 1 State Meet record time of 1:56.37. Stoll also won her third consecutive title in the 100 butterfly, finishing in a time of 51.85.

Arrowhead’s Hailey Tierney also won a pair of individual events in record-setting fashion. She won the two freestyle sprints, winning the 50 freestyle in a Division 1 record time of 21.84 and the 100 freestyle in a record time of 48.52.

Both Stoll and Tierney added their third gold medal of the meet by teaming with Francesca Smith and Payton Drexler to win the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:31.14, which was a mere .01 of a second off the State record set in 2021.

Lucy Thomas of Brookfield East became the first swimmer in State Meet history to win four State championships in 100 breaststroke. She did it style, setting a State Meet record time of 58.89.

Maggie Wanezek of Brookfield East set a meet record for the second year in a row to successfully defend her championship in the 100 backstroke. She shattered the mark she set last season with a winning time of 51.09. She also has a runner-up finish in 2020 to go with her two titles in the event.

Thomas and Wanezek both added a pair of gold medals as members of the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. They teamed with Paris Fullerton and Caroline Wanezek to finish first in the medley relay in a time of 1:39.68, which is the second-fastest time in meet history. In the 400 freestyle, they joined Audrey Olen and Reese Tiltmann to establish a new State record with a time of 3:18.95. It was the Spartans' fourth straight title in the 200 medley relay, and their third straight in the 400 freestyle relay.

Freshman Ella Antoniewski of the Waukesha South/Mukwonago co-op made quite an impression in her first State Meet, winning two events. She won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:48.07, and she captured the crown in the 500 freestyle to dethrone Tiltmann, the former defending champion who finished third. Antoniewski finished in a time of 4:49.75.

Kristina Wittmann of Germantown was the champion in the diving competition with a score of 461.8 after her third-place finish a year ago. Wylde Chupich of the Badger/Big Foot/Westosha Central/Williams Bay/Wilmot co-op finished runner-up for the second straight season.
