Battle of Undefeateds in Division 5 Girls Basketball Title Game

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Last year’s runner-up and top-seeded Black Hawk (27-0) rolled to a 71-39 win over Fall River in the Division 5 State Tournament semifinals Friday morning at the Resch Center.

The Pirates took a 5-0 lead to start the game, but the Warriors went on a 20-2 run midway through the first half to take control of the game. They led 51-16 at halftime shooting 59 percent from the floor. 

Black Hawk’s defensive pressure led to 24 Fall River turnovers and a 35-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The Warriors opened their largest lead of the game at 56-18 early in the second half and cruised to the victory.

Natalie Leuzinger and Bailey Butler led the Warriors’ offense, scoring a game-high 18 points apiece. Hannah Butler contributed 14 points and a game high five assists and four steals.

Both Samantha Leisemann and Karlee Van Gysel scored in double figures for the Pirates with 13 and 10 point, respectively. Leisemann also corralled a game-high 11 rebounds with a team-high three steals.

Fall River (24-4) ends its season at its fourth State Tournament appearance, and Black Hawk attempts to complete an undefeated season, advancing to the title game Saturday in its fifth State experience.

Second-seeded and undefeated Clayton (27-0) advances to the championship game in Division 5 with a 45-37 comeback effort over Newman Catholic Friday afternoon at the Resch Center.

The Bears imposed their will in the final 12 minutes of the game to mount a 22-2 run and overcome a double-digit deficit to earn the win. They shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and made 12-of-13 three throws in the game.

With the exception of one tie early in the first period, the Cardinals led the entire first half, and led by as many as 13 prior to taking a 26-16 lead into halftime. However, they were outscored 29-11 in the secon half. The Clayton defense forced 18 turnovers in the game, resulting in 22 points off those Cardinals’ turnovers.

Alison Leslie led the Bears offensively with 18 points. Kailey Ketz and Kennedy Patrick eah contributed in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Ketz also dished out a game-high seven assists. The Bears defense held Newman Catholic’s leading scorer on the season scoreless in the game.

The Cardinals were led by Julia Seidel with 22 points, including 16 in the first half. Kenzie Krach hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds.

Newman Catholic (24-4) is eliminated from title contention in their 12th State Tournament appearance, and Clayton advances to the championship game for the first time in their five State experiences.
