Edgewood Wins Division 2 Boys Swimming & Diving Title

MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood won the Division 2 title at the 95th Annual State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at the UW Natatorium.

The Crusaders compiled 289 points and won six events, including two relays en route to their second State championship. Former four-time defending champion Monona Grove finished second with 184 points, and Elkhorn and Rhinelander tied for third with 169 points.

The Crusaders were led by Truman teDuits, winner of four events. He won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:51.84 after a runner-up finish last season. He also captured the crown in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.93. 

teDuits was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay with teammates Alex Moen, Colin Senke and Sean O’Connor, which raced to a time of 1:35.07. In addition, he joined Nate Frucht, Senke and Moen to win the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:12.30. Frucht also swam to the title in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.64.

Ben Stitgen won his second straight championship in the diving competition for the Crusaders with a score of  458.65. Garrett Gonwa of Cedarburg finished runner-up for the second consecutive season, compiling a score of 445.95.

Jeremiah Mansavage of Fort Atkinson won a pair of events. He won the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.90 after placing ninth in the event a year ago. Mansavage later added the championship in the 100 freestyle with a winning time of 47.49 to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish.

Nolan Francis of Rhinelander was also a two-time champion. He earned the 100 backstroke title in a winning time of 49.91, and he teamed up with Joseph Heck, Devon Gaber and Russell Benoy to win the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.76.

Evan Szablewski of Shorewood won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:39.48 after a runner-up finish last year, and Sam Ryf of Berlin/Green Lake swam to victory in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.13 following a third-place finish in 2018.

The Division 1 State Championships will begin with the diving competition at 10 a.m. Saturday. The swimming finals are scheduled to follow at 3 p.m.
