Edgewood Wins Seven Events to Earn Seventh Team Title

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Edgewood won the Division 2 team championship for the seventh time, and a pair of Crusaders won four events to highlight the 2021 State Division 2 Girls Swimming & Diving Championships at the Waukesha South High School Natatorium Friday.

The Crusaders have won the title for what is essentially the seventh straight season when considering last year’s alternate season last spring. They compiled 394 points, which is 206 points more than runner-up Rhinelander with 188 points. Baraboo placed third with 156 points.

Izzy Enz of Edgewood shattered the Division 2 record in winning the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:47.65. It’s her second straight title in the event after winning the alternate season championship last spring. She also earned the silver medal with a runner-up finish in 2019. Enz also successfully defended the alternate season title she won in the 500 freestyle last spring, winning the gold this year in a time of 4:55.29.

Enz’s teammate Abby Reid of Edgewood captured the crown in both the 50 and 100 freestyles for the second time. She won the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.50 on the heels of the championship she won in the event during the alternate season to go with a runner-up finish in 2019. Her victory in the 100 freestyle came in a time of 50.93 after she won the alternate season championship in 2020-21. Reid was also runner-up in the 100 freestyle in 2019 and seventh in 2018.

Both Enz and Reid were four-time champions in the meet. In addition to their individual crowns, Reid and Enz were members of the Crusaders’ 200 freestyle relay that seized the title with teammates Sophie Reed and Brynn Stacey in a Division 2 record time of 1:34.46. It’s the seventh straight title in the event for Edgewood. Enz anchored the 400 freestyle relay to earn the gold medal with teammates teDuits, Stacey and Reed in a time of 3:25.56, which also broke the former Division 2 State meet record. It’s the sixth straight title in the 400 freestyle relay for the Crusaders. Reid anchored the 200 medley relay to secure the title with Claire Sweeney, Anna teDuits and Izzy Bloom in a time of 1:45.20, which ranks as third-fastest in Division 2 history.

Malia Francis of Rhinelander eclipsed the former record in the 100 backstroke to win her third straight championship in the event, setting a new standard with a time of 54.39. She also won the 200 individual medley title in a time of 2:03.91, which ranks the fifth-fastest in Division 2 history.

Lauren Malinowski of Wauwatosa West was victorious in the 100 butterfly with a Division 2 record time of 54.47. She moved into the Division 2 this year after placing third in Division 1 in 2019 and ninth in 2018.

Amie Barrow of Shorewood emerged out of a crowded field of contenders with State meet experience to win the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:04.59. The event featured nine swimmers that placed in the top eight in either 2019 or the two seasons conducted in 2020-21.

Kamyla Held of Whitnall won the diving title after finishing runner-up the last two seasons in addition to a fourth-place result in 2018. She entered the meet with the top qualifying performance and posted a score of 458.80.

The State Girls Swimming & Diving Championships continue Saturday with the Division 1 competition. The preliminary round in diving begins at 10 a.m. with swimming events to begin at 3:30 p.m.
