MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The final Tournament Series of the spring produced four champions at the 2024 State Girls Soccer Tournament at Southeast Sales Powersports Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park Saturday.
Second-seeded Muskego (17-1-4) won the Division 1 crown for the third straight season by defeating fourth-seeded Kimberly (22-3-1) 2-1 in the championship game.
The Papermakers struck first prior to intermission with a goal by Emily McCarthy off an assist by Marie Van Zeeland. McCarthy’s shot from the left wing deflected off the right post into the goal at 39:54. The Warriors tied the game at 1-1 at 51:58 when Maggie Mattek assisted Anna Sikorski on scoring kick inside the left post. Klara Muench scored the unassisted game-winning goal at the 71:36 mark of the second half when she navigated through the defense in the box and fired a shot that found the middle of the goal.
Muskego had a 20-9 advantage in shots on goal, and they attempted the only four corner kicks in the game. Sikorski led all attackers with 10 shots, including six on goal for the Warriors. Savannah Mittlestaedt made five saves in goal to earn the win.
Emily McCarthy led the Papermakers with four shots, including two on goal. Lauren Heckert played all 80 minutes in goal for Kimberly, making 10 saves.
Muskego won the championship for the fourth time in the past five State Tournaments, which accounts for the Warriors’ overall number of titles in their nine appearances. Kimberly finishes runner-up in its third State experience.
Top-seeded Oregon (18-1-1) edged third-seeded Whitefish Bay (17-6-5) 2-1 in the Division 2 title game after finishing runner-up last season.
After a scoreless first half, Addison Werth scored an unassisted goal from the right wing crossing to the left side of the goal at the 49:14 point of the second half. The Panthers’ defense and goalkeeper Reece McCabe made the one goal stand up for the shutout. She made three saves to earn the victory in goal.
The Panthers recorded a 16-7 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-1 lead in the number of corner kicks. Kylie Steel led Oregon with three shots on goal in five attempts, and Madonna Helf led the Blue Dukes with two shots on goal. Audyn Krueger made five saves in goal for Whitefish Bay.
Oregon won its sixth State championship and its second in the past three seasons. The Panthers have qualified for the tournament nine times in the program’s history. Whitefish Bay finished runner-up in its membership-leading 24th State appearance.
Plymouth (20-1-2) won the Division 3 championship for the second year in a row with a 2-1 win over third-seeded Catholic Memorial (13-9-1).
The Panthers scored first on an unassisted goal by Hailey Batzner, who beat the defense with the goalkeeper outside the box at 11:07. The Crusaders tied the game at 1-1 with a goal less than four minutes later at 15:06 on a Lucia Brown header off a corner kick by Kayden Scrima. The score remained tied until late in the second half when Melina Knowles deflected a shot off the cross bar into the goal for the game-winner at 69:45.
The Crusaders outshot the Panthers 10-6 and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks in the game. Knowles led Plymouth with two shots, both on goal, and Margaret Sisk attempted a game-high three shots for Catholic Memorial, all on goal. Paige Kurtz made six saves to get credited for the win in goal for the Panthers, and Alexa Flipowicz, who stopped two of the four shots on goal, was charged with the loss in goal for the Crusaders.
The back-to-back titles account for the total number of championships won by Plymouth in its four experiences at State, and Catholic Memorial finished runner-up in its 16th State appearance.
Last year’s runner-up and top-seeded Cedar Grove-Belgium (24-0-1) won the Division 5 championship this season with a 5-1 victory over third-seeded The Prairie School (16-5-2) in the title game.
Cora Erickson scored a hat trick and added two assists to propel the Rockets to the championship. She scored the first goal of the game at 10:19 with a shot that found the target from the left side of the box. The Hawks tied the score at 1-1 with a penalty kick by Keira Kimbrough at 34:39. Erickson broke the 1-1 halftime tie early in the second half with a kick into the opposite side of the goal at 41:36.
Aubrey Marti scored from 25 yards away with an assist from Erickson at 60:38 to give Cedar Grove-Belgium a 3-1 lead. Erickson added her third goal on a breakaway at 74:46, and then assisted on a goal by Hailey Prom, who placed a shot into the right side the goal at 78:52 to account for the final score.
The Hawks outshot the Rockets 20-15 in the game, but each team had 10 shots on goal. Erickson led Cedar Grove-Belgium with nine shots, including six on goal. Megan Gavigan and Norah Boerner each recorded three shots on goal for The Prairie School. Aubrey Johnson was credited with the win in goal for the Rockets, making nine saves. Finley Reminton recorded five saves and was charged with the loss in goal.
Cedar Grove-Belgium won the program’s first championship in its fourth State Tournament appearance. The Prairie School finished runner-up in its ninth State experience.
