WAUKESHA, Wis. – McFarland won the Division 2 team title, and four records fell at the 2025 Boys Swimming & Diving Championships at the Waukesha South High School Natatorium Friday.
The Spartans won their second straight team title and the eighth in the program’s history. They earned the crown by compiling 283 points. McFarland won eight of the meet’s 12 events, including five individual events and three relays. Rhinelander was runner-up with 235 points, and Whitefish Bay was third with 223 points.
The three TeBeest brothers led the Spartans to the team title with four gold medals apiece. They were instrumental in each of the team’s eight titles.
Senior Shane TeBeest won the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.52, which is the second-fastest time in history of Division 2 at the State Championships. The title comes on the heels of a runner-up finish last season. The four-time qualifier in the event also placed third in 2023 and seventh in 2022. He was also the victor in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.16, which is also the second-fastest pace in Division 2 history.
Sophomore Blake TeBeest was the champion in the 200 individual medley for the second year in a row, finishing in a time of 1:50.55, which is the sixth-fastest time in Division 2 State Meet history. He was also the champion in the 100 backstroke for the second consecutive season. He raced to a time of 48.11, which ranks second-fastest ever recorded in Division 2 at the State Meet, just .06 of a second off the record.
Sophomore Cale TeBeest broke the Division 2 record in the 100 butterfly with his effort of 48.44 to win the title for the second straight year.
McFarland won the 200 medley relay for the third consecutive season as the TeBeest trio teamed-up with senior Preston Nygaard to shatter the Division 2 record in a time of 1:29.88. The Spartans’ 400 relay also won the crown for the third straight year. Rudie joined the TeBeest trio to post a time of 3:04.66, which ranks second-fastest in Division 2 history behind last year’s record-setting performance. Cale TeBeest joined Nygaard and juniors Orry Landolt and Luke Rudie to earn the title in the 200 freestyle relay for the second year in a row, finishing in a time of 1:26.56.
Senior Ethan Schutten of Whitnall eclipsed the former state records to win the gold medal in both the 200 and 500 freestyles. He won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:37.67 after previously finishing runner-up in 2023 and 13th in 2022. Schutten added the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:22.79 to become a two-time champion in the event. He earned the title in 2023 after placed 10th in 2022.
Senior Julian Callender of Stoughton earned his third straight championship in the 100 breaststroke. His winning time of 55.31 is third-fastest Division 2 time recorded in the event. In addition to his three titles, he placed fifth in 2022. Senior Evan Zimbelman of Cedarburg captured the diving competition with a score of 403.15 after he finished runner-up a year ago.
The 101st State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships will resume Saturday with the Division 1 diving competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. and swimming events scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
