WAUKESHA, Wis. – Middleton won the Division 1 team championship, and three event records were set at the 101st State Boys Swimming & Diving Championships at the Waukesha South High School Natatorium Saturday.
The Cardinals won their third straight State team title and their fourth overall by compiling 273 points. They won eight of the 12 events in the meet. Verona was second for the with 175 points, and Brookfield Central/East was third with 151.5 points.
Senior Sam Wolf of Middleton earned individual titles in two events and two relays. He set the Division 1 State Meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 53.07. Two years ago, he placed fourth in the event. Wolf swam the fifth-fastest time in State history in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:47.58 to win his second consecutive championship in the event. Prior to his gold-medal performances the past two seasons, he placed third in 2023.
Junior Max Carter of Middleton also swam to a pair of individual event championships and two relay titles. He earned the crown in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.60, which places him seventh on the Division 1 list of fastest times in the event. He later won the 100 backstroke in a time of 48.67, which is the fifth-swiftest time on the event’s all-time honor roll. Carter improved on his runner-up finish in the event last season.
The Cardinals also received a gold-medal performance from senior Caden Van Buren in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.24 after placing seventh last season. His performance this year ranks seventh on the all-time list of fastest times in the event.
Middleton won all three relays and two them in record fashion. The Cardinals won the 200 medley relay for the second straight year. Junior Max Carter, freshman Henry Zanton, and seniors Caden Van Buren and Colin Gabert won the event with a time of 1:30.60. It eclipses the former record set by the Middleton medley relay last year. The quartet of Wolf, Van Buren, Gabert and junior Ben Cutler Heidescheit shattered the record in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:21.93. In addition, the 400 relay team of Cutler Heidescheit, junior Espen Morner, Carter and Wolf earned the Cardinals the title for the fourth year in a row, finishing with time of 3:03.78.
Senior Alex Heinrich of Madison Memorial won a pair of events in the meet. He outpaced the rest of the competition to capture the title in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:36.70, which ranks as the second-fastest time in Division 1 State Meet history, after placing ninth last season. Heinrich followed that performance with the win in the 100 butterfly in a time of 47.72, which places him sixth on the all-time butterfly honor roll.
The defending champion in the 500 freestyle retained his title. Junior Carter Jewell of Muskego swam to another gold medal with a time of 4:28.59, which is the event’s sixth-quickest finish in Division 1 meet history.
Senior Brady Huettl of Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial, a four-time qualifier, won the diving competition for the second straight season with a final score of 502.45. He also finished third in 2023 and 11th in 2022.
