The first day of the 2018 State Boys Golf Championships featured sunny skies and pleasant temperatures at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis.
Last year's Division 1 runner-up arquette leads after the first day of competition with a five-player, 18-hole score of 299. Fond du Lac is in second place with a score of 305. Middleton and defending champion Arrowhead are tied for 3rd with 306. Piercen Hunt of Arrowhead is the Division 1 individual leader with a 3-under par 69. Ethan Graham of Marquette and Russell Dettmering of Merrill enter the second day of play a stroke back.
Defending Division 2 team champion Edgewood leads the field after the first day with a score of 303. Rice Lake and Lakeland are tied for second at 326. Lukas Heckmann of Lakeside Lutheran completed his first round, leading the Division 2 field with a 4-under par of 68. Rory Gierhart of Edgewood is three strokes behind Heckmann with a 71, and Bryce Jacobson of Peshtigo is third with a 73.
The Division 3 team leader after the first day is three-time defending champion St. Mary's Springs with a five-player score of 329. Abundant Life Christian/Madison Country Day is second with a 347, and Eleva-Strum is third at 356. Doyle Kelly of St. Mary's Springs is the individual leader with a 3-over par 75. Austin Schnell of Mishicot is second with a 77.
The final day of competition begins tomorrow at 7 a.m. with Divisions 2 and 3. Division 1 will be teeing off at noon.
