THE MEET: The 99th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys State Individual Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 2-4 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and will resume at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

LAST YEAR: Top-seeded Martin Blagoev of Kenosha Indian Trail won the singles title in Division 1 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over third-seeded Noah Viste of Wauwatosa East in the championship match. In Division 1 doubles play, the second-seeded tandem of Henry Irwin and Reed Scullen of Brookfield East defeated the top-seeded team of Sam Kredell and Nick Tiahnybik of Arrowhead 6-2, 6-1. Top-seeded Alex Sviatoslavsky of Edgewood won the Division 2 singles championship by defeating second-seeded Adrian Yin of Brookfield Academy 6-1, 6-0. Drew Buckholdt and Pranav Gogineni of Brookfield Academy, the top-seeded doubles team in the Division 2 bracket, defeated second-seeded Andrew Bechthold and Shaan Sharma of University School of Milwaukee 6-2, 6-4 in the title match.
DIVISION 1 SINGLES OUTLOOK: Senior Tyler Nelson of Waunakee was issued the #1 seed with his undefeated record of 25-0 this season. He qualified and won one match last season, and he qualified and advanced to the second round as a freshman in 2019. Sophomore Solomon Dunsirn of Neenah qualified as a freshman last season and advanced to the quarterfinals before being ousted from title contention. He enters the tournament with a 31-1 mark this season. Junior Ethan Yu of Madison West is also experiencing State for the second time. He is seeded third with a 16-1 record. After a bye in the first round last season, he fell in his second-round match versus eventual champion Martin Blagoev. Sophomore Oscar Corwin of Brookfield East qualifies for the second year in a row. He is seeded fourth with a 25-3 record. Corwin won his first two matches at State last season before bowing out to Blagoev in the third round. Freshman Ethan Bo of Middleton received the fifth seed with an 11-3 record, and senior Marco Loro of Wauwatosa East qualifies for the first time and is seeded sixth with a 23-3 mark. Junior Chatton Haws of Cedarburg qualifies for the second straight season. He enters the tournament as the seventh seed with a 26-1 record after advancing to the third round a year ago. Sophomore Kristian Blagoev of Kenosha Indian Trail is the #8 seed. He has compiled an 18-2 record this season. He advanced to the quarterfinals last season as a freshman before falling from title contention. Another individual qualifier with State Meet experience is senior Chase Lindwell of Monona Grove. He is seeded 12th with a 21-3 record. He advanced to the third round last year after gaining tourney experience as a freshman season in 2019. Since 2001, the top seed in the bracket has won 13 of the 20 singles titles during that span, and the lowest seed to win the championship since then was a fourth seed.
DIVISION 1 DOUBLES OUTLOOK: The Brookfield East senior duo of Henry Irwin and Reed Scullen seek to become the first tandem to win back-to-back doubles titles in Division 1 since Jordan Aranda and Ted Stuckslager of Shorewood did it in 1985-86 when the tournament featured only one division. They are the top seed with a 15-2 record this season. Scullen gained State experience in 2019 qualifying with a different partner to win two matches in doubles play, and Scullen has additional State experience qualifying in the singles bracket in 2019. Seniors Nolan Kubiak and Khaled Saleh of Neenah are the second seed in the bracket with an undefeated 31-0 record this season. Kubiak transition from singles play after placing fifth at State last season and winning his first-round match as a freshman in 2019. Saleh placed third last year in doubles play with a different partner after qualifying with still another partner in 2019. Seniors Alex Deubel and Ben Brandel of Arrowhead are seeded third with an 18-2 record. Last year, the duo placed sixth at State. Deubel qualified with a different partner in 2019, which resulted in a loss in the first round. Senior Jacob Baldwin and sophomore Nikko Vilwock of Sun Prairie are seeded fourth in the bracket after the tandem qualified last season and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling out of title contention. Senior Alex Gould and junior Lincoln Marshall of Marquette are seeded fifth. They have compiled a 9-1 record this year. Marshall qualified in the doubles bracket last season with a different partner and advanced to the third round. The #6 seed in the bracket is the senior twin brother combo of Andrew and Ryan LaBelle of Mukwonago. They enter the tournament with a 26-3 mark to this point of the season. The duo advanced to the quarterfinals last season before being eliminated from title contention. In 2019, they advanced to the third round as freshmen. The seventh seed was handed to seniors James Mirsberger and Sriram Arvind of Brookfield Central. They have compiled a 23-6 record this season after advancing to the third round last year. Arvind gained State Tournament experience in 2019 when he qualified in the single bracket. He won his first-round match before falling in his match in the second round. The brother tandem of senior Conner Kryscio and freshman CJ Kryscio of Menomonee Falls comprise the eighth-seeded duo. They have compiled a 19-6 record this season leading up to the tourney. Conner Kryscio is transitioning from singles play after qualifying and winning a match in the singles bracket at State a year ago. Among the remaining seeded pairs in the doubles bracket is seniors Michael Francken and Owen Kendler of Brookfield East at #10. The duo has recorded a 25-2 record this season after placing fifth last season. Francken qualified and advanced to the third round with a different partner as a freshman in 2019. Since 2001, the top seed in the bracket has won 12 of the 20 doubles titles during that span, and the lowest seed to win the championship since then was a fourth seed.
DIVISION 2 SINGLES OUTLOOK: Junior Max Watchmaker of University School of Milwaukee is the top seed with a 17-3 record. He advanced to the quarterfinals before falling out of championship contention. Senior Teddy Wong of Dominican/Eastbrook Academy qualifies this season as the #2 seed with a 14-2 record. He has experienced success in each of his two previous appearances, placing third a year ago, and sixth as freshman in 2019. Sophomore Adrian Yin of Brookfield Academy is the third seed with a 13-4 record this season. He advanced to the championship match last year and finished runner-up as a freshman. Fourth-seeded Dayne Lindow, a senior from East Troy, qualifies for the third time with a 21-1 record this year. He placed fourth last year, and in 2019, he won his first-round match. Freshman Wesley Auth of St. Mary Catholic is seeded fifth with an undefeated record of 20-0 in his first season, and sophomore Sonu Beeram of New Berlin Eisenhower qualifies as the sixth seed with a 15-9 mark this season. Freshman Anderson Fortney of Aquinas is seeded seventh with a 20-2 record, and the eighth seed is sophomore Hayden Latus of Catholic Memorial. He has compiled a 13-9 mark this season after qualifying as a freshman last year and winning his first-round match before falling in the second round. Since 2001, the top seed in the bracket has won 14 of the 20 singles titles during that span, and the lowest seed to win the championship since then was a sixth seed.
DIVISION 2 DOUBLES OUTLOOK: Seniors Shaan Sharma and Joe Zimmerman of University School of Milwaukee is the top seed in the bracket with a 14-4 record. Sharma advanced to the championship doubles match last season with a different partner and finished runner-up. Zimmerman also qualified with a different partner last season and advanced to the second round before falling to Sharma and his partner. Senior Pranav Gogineni and sophomore Vibhu Guda of Brookfield Academy are the second seed with a 16-6 mark this season. Gogineni is one-half the tandem that captured the gold medal last season. The third seed was issued to sophomores Nick Bittner and Nate Hall of Xavier with a 21-4 record. Bittner earned State experience last year by qualifying with a different partner and winning a first-round match. The fourth-seeded doubles squad is junior Trent Adamson and sophomore Nate Carson of Catholic Memorial with a 10-11 record. Carson placed sixth at State last year with a different partner. The brother tandem of senior Jack Hehli and freshman Kyle Hehli of West Salem is seeded fifth. They enter play this week with an undefeated record of 14-0. Junior Jack Hehli is a two-time singles qualifier. He placed sixth last season, and he qualified and fell in his first-round match in 2019. Junior Calvin Sharpe and freshman Jonathan Orth of The Prairie School comprise the sixth-seeded duo with a 10-4 record. Sharpe qualified last year with a different partner that resulted in a loss in the first round. Senior Layton Carls and sophomore Payton Adams of St. Thomas More are seeded seventh with a 20-4 record. Carls has State Tournament experience in singles play, qualifying last year. He lost his opening-round match. Senior Paul Yoon and junior Liam Houselander of New Berlin Eisenhower is seeded eighth with a 15-6 mark this year. Since 2001, the top seed in the bracket has won 13 of the 20 doubles titles during that span, and an unseeded tandem has won the championship once during that span.
