State Volleyball Champions Crowned

Green Bay, Wis.– Champions were crowned in four girls divisions and one boys division at the State Volleyball Tournament Saturday at the Resch Center.

Top-seeded Arrowhead (41-3) cruised to the girls Division 1 championship with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 sweep of Oconomowoc in the title game.

Aubrey Hamilton was the only player for the Warhawks with double figures in kills with 18.  The Warhawks posted a .196 hitting percentage as a team, and held the Raccoons to a .148 attack efficiency. Hamilton also led the Warhawks on defense with 13 digs. Jade Stefan assisted on a match-high 32 of the 38 Arrowhead kills.

Cordelia Kearns led the Raccoons with 10 kills and Maleah Howe chipped in with eight. Tayler Alden led the team in assists with 24, and Caitlin Crawford compiled a match-high 17 digs of Arrowhead attack attempts.

The Warhawks win their first State championship in their seventh State Tournament appearance, and Oconomowoc (39-4) finishes runner-up for the second consecutive season and for the third time in their four State experiences.

Girls Division 1 Championship

Third-seeded Luxemburg-Casco (35-13) upset top-seeded McFarland 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 to claim possession of the girls Division 2 State volleyball championship.

The Spartans’ balanced attack was a key contributor to the win. Hannah Derenne led all hitters in the match with 14 kills, but she received plenty of help on the attack from Grace Holschuh with 11 kills, as well Kenzie Hanson and Holly Baierl, who each added nine. Bekah Day led all setters in the match with 39 assists, and Alli Roughieaux led the squad with 13 digs. 

McFarland was challenged to stay in system, which led to a .075 hitting percentage for the match. Avery Pennekamp was the only Spartan to collect double figures in kills with 13. Lizzy Fortune dished out 25 assets, and Erin Eggers led all defenders in the match with 18.

Luxemburg-Casco wins its first championship in its second State appearance, and McFarland finishes runner-up in its second State experience.

Girls Division 2 Championship
Luxemburg-Casco (35-13) def. McFarland (37-4) - 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 - Stats

 

Top-seeded Howards Grove (42-4) rolled to a 25-22, 25-14, 25-15 victory over Aquinas to win the girls Division 3 championship.

The Tigers offensive attack and defense allowed them to stay in system the entire match. They compiled a 47-26 advantage in kills and posted a .246 kill percentage for the match, compared to the .079 efficiency for the Blugolds.

Howards Grove featured a balanced attack with four players notching eight or more kills with Saige Damrow and Karissa Kaminski leading the way with 12 apiece. Emma Baierl assisted on 38 of the kills, and Mackenzie Holzwart led four players in double figures in digs with 19.

The Blugolds only attacker in double figures was Lexi Donarski with 14. Taylor Theusch assisted on all 26 of the Aquinas kills, and Victoria Nolte had a team-leading 14 digs.

The Tigers win their third State championship and the first since 2016. Aquinas (31-4) finishes runner-up in its second State appearance.

Girls Division 3
Howards Grove (44-4) def. Aquinas (31-4) - 25-22, 25-14, 25-15 - Stats

 

Clear Lake (38-0) capped an undefeated season by sweeping former defending champion Catholic Central  25-15, 25-17, 25-16 in the girls Division 4 championship match.

The Warriors were in control of the match from start to finish. They held a 36-24 advantage in kills and hit for a .301 attack percentage while limiting the Hilltoppers to a .010 hitting percentage.

Maggie Rosen led the Warriors in kills with a match-high 13, and Julianna Rosen chipped in with 10. Madison Zimmer distributed a match-high 30 assists, and Lilyan Hacker led the defense with 14 digs.

Catholic Central was led on offense by Sammie Seib with 10 kills, and Ella Shaw dished out 21 assists. Grace Antlfinger was the team leader in digs with 13. 

Clear Lake wins the State title in their first-ever State appearance, and Catholic Central (29-11) finishes runner-up for the second time to go with six State championships.

Girls Division 4 Championship

Top-seeded Kimberly (35-2) reversed the result of the 2018 State championship game in a rematch versus former defending champion Germantown with a 25-21, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20 triumph to win the boys volleyball title.

The Papermakers featured a balanced hitting attack with three hitters recording double figures in kills. Spencer Herman and Landon Krause shared the team lead with 11 each, and Tommy Clausz added 10 to contribute to the team’s .264 hitting percentage. Tony Wisneski distributed a team-leading 31 assists. Mike Vanden Heuvel and Clausz led the Papermakers on defense with 10 digs and six block assists, respectively.

The Warhawks were led by Drew Jensen with a match-high 20 kills and Hans Stelpflug with a game-high 34 assists. On defense, Adam Lopata made a match-high 19 digs.

Kimberly wins its first State championship after finishing runner-up last year in its first tourney appearance. Germantown (28-6) finishes runner-up in its seventh State experience.
